who else has an IUD? do you really remember to check the string every month? I check sometimes a few times a week when its on my mind, but then I'll forget for a few months. anyone else have that problem? as long as I get around to checking is there any danger?

Initially I checked rather frequently but now only when I think about it. The only danger of not checking is that it may have come dislodged and you are open to pregnancy.

It is pretty big, to just fall out and not notice though. I'm remember to check now since I'm thinking about. so everything is good I guess.

I usually only check mine once in a while. I'd notice if it was rejecting...my Mirena going in *sucked*, so I don't doubt it will hurt coming out as well.

I check mine the day I stop putting in my menstrual cup because my period's over, it's an easy-enough reminder. I too think it'd be a heck of a thing to fall out and not notice, as much as I noticed it going in... but it's still easy enough to check every month anyway.

And at Liz2 saying "the only danger of not checking is that it may have come dislodged and you are open to pregnancy," ... um... to some of us that's a big deal! I'm relying on my IUD for a lot, and I am very grateful for what it does for me!

I really, really, really want to get the ParaGard. I can't take hormonal birth control, and my boyfriend has the worst time keeping erections with condoms. Since I just started having sex (I'm 25), my gynecologist told me to wait three months and then we'd talk about me getting one. The more I read about it (good for 10 years, 99.5% effective!), the more I'm wishing I had one right now.

Try to talk to a different doctor. the first doctor I talked to refused to give me one. The next person I talked to was all "YES! you seem to have done your research, when is your next cycle. soon? great we'll try to fit you in" and within the week I had paraguard.

it does make cramps worse esp the first few months and my period is heavier than before. but I LOVE it anyway. I will deal with that over hormone stuff anyday.

I check every day, but I'm paranoid like that, and it only takes a quick second in the shower to do. XD

Agreeing with Vegan Silk; see a different doctor. There is absolutely no medical reason you shouldn't be able to get one right now. You don't need to have been pregnant or given birth, you don't need to be married, you'd need to be anything except have a good OBGYN!

Good luck!

My gyno suggested giving me an IUS to treat me endometriosis and ovarian cysts. I haven't been by to see her lately, since I'm in the middle of an insurance change, but if she still thinks it's a good treatment option, I'm all for it. There's only one brand of birth control I've reacted well to, and it's super-expensive.
