Is my vagina just shallow?

Contributor: LavenderSkies LavenderSkies
Hi everyone,

My partner and my toys are all above 6 inches. However, I find that I can usually only take approximately 4 inches comfortably. Is this normal? Can I do serious damage to myself if I force myself to accomodate more, or could this "train" my vagina? Just curious!

Your vagina could very well be shallow, or it's possible you are not aroused enough. When a woman is aroused the vagina lengthens forcing the cervix and uterus to ascend. But forcing yourself to take more if you are not properly aroused can potentially harm your cervix and that definitely hurts. You can experiment with different positions (woman on top, doggy style, etc) that allow for deeper penetration.

Firekitten is right. For my two cents, I'd say relax, get yourself really aroused, and then practice. Maybe soak in a warm bath, read some erotica or watch some porn, and then practice with some dildos (or your partner) and see if you are able to take in more of them comfortably. Never force it if you feel pain though, that's your bodies signal to stop. If that doesn't work maybe talking to your gyno could give some other options.

I have to agree with firekitten & liilii080.

When we first engage with a dildo I'm careful to keep penetration shallow. My wife will press her hips towards me as she becomes more aroused - taking in more - some times all of a 7" or 7.5" toy - but not always. I'd say go slow, keep some clitoral stimulation in the mix and do what's most comfortable.

BTW - the same is true for girth, start smaller before trying anything larger. We start around 1.5" then she may want the 1.75" or the occasional 2" diameter.

It is actually entirely normal. The average depth of an aroused vagina is 4 inches. Of course anatomy varies widely, but because the average penis length is about 5.5 inches, most people don't usually run into an issue of feeling like they should be able to fit more. But, the vagina is very elastic and I can't image you would do yourself serious damage by trying to accommodate more, as long as you are doing nothing that is painful.

Tuesdays With Nina: When Size Matters: How to Deal With Too Much of a Good Thing from last week mentions some tips on having sex someone who is "too long" for you...skip forward to about the 4 minute mark (the first few minutes deal with girth rather than legnth).
