increased masturbation, and antidepressants

Contributor: Miss Anonymous Miss Anonymous
Normally I masturbate about 3-5 times a week. The last month and a half its now two-four times a day! everyday!! I don't know why the increase of sex drive. My guy think its because the doctor upped my antidepressants (wellbutrin) from 300 to 450mg a day. Each orgasm is good, never have a problem.

My guy actually told me this morning. "Thank God for your toys, because you are tiring me out" I was like " oh, homeboy no you did not" ha-ha

have any of you ever dealt with this? or ever dealt with random increased libido?

Whenever I was on anti-depressants my sex drive would be about the same as normal, but I had an extremely difficult time having an orgasm. I would occaisionally be able to get a weak one out after maybe an hour of using toys. It was incredibly frustrating. I ended up going off of the antidepressants because I figured that regular orgasms helped with depression better than the medication did.

Usually there is an organic reason for me to experience a surge in my libido...my guys fear those times because I am also MUCH more aggressive during those times.

Wellbutrin is known for increasing sex drive as a "side effect". Hence, why it's often combined with an SSRI. I'm not sure if it did to me when I was on it, I'm pretty horny no matter what.

I thought antidepressents tended to decrease libido?

Most do. And they may also cause inability to come or weak orgasms. Wellbutrin (bupropion) tends to increase it. There is a good website that compares the antidepressants - crazymeds.us

I've had my libido increase. Not due to antidepressants, though. Now that I think about it, I think (it was long ago) Prozac caused me to be very horny, but I had a hard time coming. I got off of it, and the problem disappeared. Then they put me on a tricyclic (can't remember which one) and the orgasm thing happened again. It's the only time I've had problems with orgasm until peri-menopause.

I was on Welbutrin and I didn't notice any sexual side effects at all. Although I have heard some people have them. Some even have an increase in orgasm frequency. I should only be so lucky.

My Man "complains" that I wear him out regularly. Part of it is the age difference, (he's older and at the age where some men start to have mild ED problems) but he is glad to have sex often.

Hmm ... I wonder if I should get on Wellbutrin ... Zoloft totally kills both my orgasm and libido. Being able to function emotionally is very important to me, that's why I'm on it to begin with. But it really leaves me with no drive.

Yup - had the same thing happen to me. Not to the same extreme but I went from 75 mg to 150 mg. I used to take Paxil and had tried Effexor and those didn't change my libido, but killed my ability to orgasm. On Wellbutrin, my libido has increased and there's no change in my ability to orgasm whatsoever. And as an added plus, it also causes weight loss in some patients - including me. It is by far THE BEST drug my psych. has tried me on thus far.

It's so interesting how everyone is so different. Zoloft is the one antidepressant that gives me NO side effects. I didn't notice any sexual perks from Welbutrin, but some people do. Zoloft just leaves me "normal" (if there is such a thing for me) and has never caused sexual issues (nor added horniness) weight gain, or anything else.

I feel glad to have found something that works. Chili, talk to your doctor, if the Zoloft is killing your drive and ability to orgasm. No one should have to put up with those side effects.

Thanks, P'Gell. I'm glad Zoloft really worked out for you - the lack of libido is the only side-effect I have from it. Otherwise, it's a blessing.

When I was on anti-depressants, I'd say my sex drive stayed the same, but it was very frustrating because I could not orgasm, so could not relieve the tension that my body felt. So there were times when I masturbated more, because I felt frustrated that I couldn't come-surely this next time I will ETC.

WOW!! I am on masturbating almost 3-5 week off the anti-depressants (I was on Celexa and Ativan for anxiety). The Ativan actually prolonged the sex--I couldn't seem to orgasm, which was great, at the time, for the guy I was with! Until he was done and then he realized that I was still in top gear!!

I had the opposite reaction when I started my antidepressants. I used to masturbate daily, but now its down to a few times a month, max. I mean, I still think about sex constantly... I just don't know why I don't feel the urge to masturbate.

Antidepressants killed my libido... and even when I was aroused I couldnt orgasm... it was so terrible to me/my psyche/my relationship that I switched meds 4 times!

I had an insanely high sex drive several years ago after starting an antidepressant. I don't know what was in that stuff, but I'm not taking it anymore. I've never had an antidepressant lower my libido, but birth control did.

Oh how frustrating. I'd say orgasms are better too. They've eased me out of many funks and bad days in general.

I take antidepressants for anxiety and for the longest time couldn't have an orgasm (my sex drive was unchanged, though, so that sucked). My doctor actually added wellbutrin to my normal meds to try to fix the problem, and it worked like a charm Wellbutrin has a reputation for increasing libido.

I have heard about Wellbutrin and increased sex drive. I used to take Lexapro, and I found it decreased my sex drive a lot and made it difficult to orgasm. For awhile, I would feel like I was about to get off, then suddenly I was really sensitive like I had skipped the orgasm part. It was awful.

How strange, whenever I've taken antidepressants it's always killed my sex drive, and even when I would try to masturbate I couldn't get off, made me feel even worse. Guess that shows how antidepressants can affect/effect us differently.
