I have let my boyfriend use his spit, but I somehow find it hard to stay wet that way. Is it better to use lube? What is your favorite lube and why? I want to know if spit can cause infections too. Because lately I have found myself getting more UTI infections. Maybe, it is because of my diet or the toys I play with.. But, let's not get too sidetracked... Also, my vagina is very sensitive anyways. Do you have any recommendations for a vagina that has trouble relaxing and staying wet? I like water-based lubricants, but I can't seem to find the perfect one! I do not like oil-based because they seem to make me get infections too. It sucks having such a sensitive vagina... I often don't know what to do. Any advice?
Something I have always wondered is, is it okay to use spit as lube?

Spit is not something I would use or recommend as lube. I can't say it's what has caused your increase in UTI's for sure, but it is a possibility. There are a lot of good quality lubes on this site and I'd recommend reading reviews to see if there are any that match the consistency and qualities you are looking for and then buying a small bottle and trying them out.
Also, urination before and after sex, drinking 100% cranberry juice, and eating yogurt can all help prevent UTI's to an extent. Good luck.

I can't stand when ppl use spit it is a turn off for me but lots of ppl like it. You should never put oil based anything into your vaginia it will give you infections. My favorite water based lube is by fun factory toy fluid, a little goes a long way and doesn't get sticky. Also what types of materials are your toys made out of some are more prone to bacteria?

You should definitely get yourself some good lube. I use spit for handjobs sometimes, but honestly spit dries out pretty quickly and could be carrying who knows what (especially if you're sick). There are some amazing lubes to try out and they last longer than spit. I'm personally a fan of the Sliquid Swirl.

We use saliva in the heat of the moment, sometimes. But lube definitely works so much better. Since you have sensitive genitals, I recommend a lube by Sliquid. Many of their lubes are hypoallergenic, paraben & glycerin free.

We're currently using Liquid Silk. Though I don't really advise it, I have certainly used spit in the heat of the moment.

If you are prone to UTIs and yeast infections, I'd avoid glycerin and parabens in your lube. I highly recommend Hathor Aphrodisa Pure. It is free of the ingredients that commonly cause problems for sensitive women, and it is also a FANTASTICALLY slick and long-lasting lube---the best lube we've ever tried. Even my husband prefers it, and he doesn't even have to worry about sensitivities.
One thing to keep in mind about using saliva on sensitive genitalia is that there can be starches and sugars in saliva. This could definitely cause infections.

Having lube is great, but I don;t think there is anything wrong with spit.
04/07/2011
It will work in a pinch. But I would get some lube. If you are going to use spit, make sure who ever is doing to spitting has brushed their teeth and used some mouthwash. You don't want a infection down there.

We use it sometimes.. not always.
04/08/2011
We use it all the time. Sometimes we use lube, but most times it's spit. I love it when he spits...

I've never had a problem using spit as lube for masturbation or for anal... I've never needed it for vaginal sex before though. Others have mentioned Sliquid as a glycerin-free line of lubes, so if you're not responding well to spit you could give that a shot.
Also, liilii080 mentioned drinking 100% cranberry juice, but that would be so tart you'd look like Calvin Coolidge. Popular brands you can get at the store are between 27-30% cranberry juice. If you buy them fresh before Thanksgiving, you can make your own... but I've never made it stronger than 40%, and I really like tart things.
But that's off topic. Cranberry juice does reduce your chances of getting UTIs by being too acidic in the bladder for the flagellate forms of UTI-causing bacteria. I drink ~6 oz every morning because I used to get them a lot. Things are better now with cranberry juice and drinking water continuously all day (the longer urine sits in your bladder, the better chance bad bacteria have of multiplying, so the more often you can pee, the better). I still use spit when I masturbate, and I stopped getting UTIs just from drinking more, and drinking some cranberry juice.
tl;dr: cranberry juice, lots of water. Spit's neither here nor there, but if you're worried about it, there's no harm in quitting.

I don't use it as lubricant, but sometimes if he goes down on me that is how his saliva acts.
I wouldn't say it's terribly harmful, unless maybe he just ate a bag full of sugar-candy
I would recommend Better Sex Essentials Silicone lube or something from Sliquid if you're sensitive.
PS: Have you tried Azo cranberry tablets? Easier than cranberry juice!
Drink lots of water, and try to urinate after sex- to push out any bacteria that might have found its way up there.

I've used saliva as lube, but also used things intended for that purpose as well. I've never had an infection, either. Then again, my body is so acidic that my skin can eat through metallic jewelry unless it's silver or 14K gold and up. Maybe it just kills the germs before they can affect me!

Saliva contains a multitude of bacteria that are foreign to the environment of the vagina. Now, if your immune sysytem is up to snuff, it should be quite capable of dealing with them. The biggest fear I would have is if your body were trying to fight something else off, it may become overwhelmed, and you may set yourself up for a nasty infection. The environment inside the vagina is also not welcoming to bacteria, but opportunistic bacteria could gain a foothold if everything is not in perfect working order.

There are are some really good organic lubricants or ones that are good for a sensitive pussy. I personally don't like spit for lube and either does my partner.

Sometimes it can work, but I'd recommend going for a purpose-built lube when possible for several reasons.
First, as has been noted the mouth is a far from sanitary environment. A couple of years ago one study indicated a very noticeable increase in yeast infections among women who received cunnilingus (don't know what happened to that, but for a while they were considering discouraging cunnilingus, which means the study could have been somewhat "political"). In addition to the microbes there can also be bits of food residue in the saliva.
Secondly, saliva is very inconsistent. Think about it - sometimes your mouth has extremly fluid saliva, other times it's very thick and hard to swallow. Along with the consistency changes the lubricating value of saliva also changes, so there can be times when it just isn't slick enough.

It's not necessarily his spit that is causing your infections, but I would always err on the side of caution and use a good lubricant instead. I've used spit before (and I'm also very sensitive down there) without any problems, but I still prefer lube because it sticks around longer and is a lot more slippery, which makes sex a whole lot more comfortable. I haven't tried very many lubes myself, but I would recommend you try something from the Sliquid line since most, if not all, of their lubes don't contain any glycerin or parabens that can irritate you. Personally I'm in love with Sliquid Sassy Booty because it's really really thick and can be used for both vaginal and anal sex.
There's also a few things you can try to help prevent your UTIs from coming back. If you go to the bathroom right after sex, it helps wash away bacteria that may be sticking around that area, and drinking cranberry juice is good for bladder/urinary tract health. You could also buy cranberry pills if you don't like the juice. And also drink plenty of water!

For vaginal sex, it appears to be fine. My Man and I rarely use commercial lube for PIV sex, or even toys when we're playing together.

For anal toys, play and anal sex, a commercial lube really needs to be used. Usually spit simply doesn't lubricate well enough. (Although they show it in porn all the time, they are really using lube when the cameras aren't on them.)
My favorite water lube is Sliquid H2O Ride. It's perfect for just about anything.
04/09/2011
It's not recommended for anal play, but for PIV sex it's ok. The bacteria in your mouth is not meant to be near your anus.
04/09/2011
For the UTIs, wear nothing but cotton panties (NO thongs, they can bring bacteria forward from your anus) wash with a mild soap, urinate before and after sex, keep your toys VERY clean, don't put anything near the urethra which has been in or near the anus, without washing, avoid porous toys, wipe from front to back, drink LOTS of water, use cranberry juice frequently (it prevents bacteria from sticking to the lining of the urinary tract) and make sure your partner (and yourself) has clean hands and mouth before sex.
I hope we can help you.

I don't see a problem using spit - but there are so many better options out there. Why spit on your partner - unless your into degrading them?
04/09/2011
We have used spit as lube occassionallyfor vaginal and sometime anal penetration. It has worked well for us when lube was not available, but lube does work better. I think it is pretty hot when she gives me a bj and coats me with her saliva then slides herself down on me...
04/10/2011
Use it from time to time, usually do not need lube. But after having second child invested in some good lube and it works wonders. I don't see spit being a problem if he/she goes down anyways.

There are many ways to transfer saliva from the mouth to the genitals. It doesn't have to involve projectile spitting like you see in pornography.

It's okay to use. It just doesn't work very well. Traditional lubricants are much slicker and last longer.

I used spit for fingering myself before I moved out of the house and was able to buy lube. It worked fairly well, but its definitely way better with real lube. And I wouldn't use spit for lube, if I was putting a toy or a penis up there. Astroglide Gel, all the way.

Yes, we use spit for lube all the time.
