I recently saw a post here where one of the members was asking about the safety of using yogurt to treat a yeast infection, which led me to write this post.
I am a nurse, and I have also studied many homeopathic remedies for the past 20 years, which I myself use before resorting to medications if possible.
In using yogurt to treat a yeast infection, there are several guidelines which should be followed. First, if you have an infection that is moderate to severe, seek medical attention. This remedy is for early onset yeast infections. Secondly,it must be plain yogurt with no added sugar or sweeteners and have 'live active acidophilus' bacteria. Thirdly, this is not a treatment for bacterial infections! Seek medical intervention if you suspect a bacterial infection.
To treat a mild infection, eat 2-4 cups of yogurt per day. This is also very good for the digestive tract. If you must have some sweetness to it,only use honey, but the sugars could reduce the effectiveness of the cultures. Another good way to eat it is to add chives, roasted garlic, peppercorns or horseradish and use as a dip for vegetables or crackers.
The next step is to use a separate container of the plain yogurt for vaginal use. There are two effective ways to do this. A tampon can be dipped into the yogurt and then inserted vaginally. This should be done 3-4 times a day, leaving in for only an hour. Be sure to remove after this time. Another good method is to take a medical glove and fill the fingers with the yogurt. Allow to freeze, and each 'finger' can be used as an application and inserted. Wear a sanitary pad when using this method and it is helpful to be lying down, so the yogurt has time to do its job.
Continue this treatment for 1-3 days. If your condition worsens or has not cleared up by this point,be sure to seek medical attention. This is also a great preventative treatment if you are susceptible to yeast infections or if you are going to be taking antibiotics. If you do use while receiving antibiotic therapy, wait at least an hour before or after the antibiotics, as the live cultures in the yogurt will be rendered useless due to the treatment.I have used this remedy for almost 20 years and it has worked every time except one when I was on extremely high doses of antibiotics.
Listen to your body, and if at any time you feel that your condition is getting worse,or if you begin to run a fever, it may be a bacterial infection. Always check with your physician.
