Have you ever had HFMD (Hand Foot Mouth Disease) Right now is HFMD season, be very careful!

Contributor: K101 K101
Well, unfortunately we found out our precious angel has Hand Foot Mouth Disease. I hate it! She apparently picked it up from another kid last week. I first noticed she was teething about 3 days ago & we were going to go to the ER & we were sure it was only teething until it didn't get better and she developed small rashes on her feet. Yep, it was HFMD! And yesterday one of the boys who's 11 started complaining of a sore in his mouth. He was sure it was caused from "that stupid mouth wash" I made him use. I looked at it, told him it was a lie bump and later today it got worse and so did the others. He went to the Dr. and was diagnosed with strep. We didn't find out the girl had HFMD until later tonight so we didn't know that was his problem too.

Apparently this is the season for HFMD and the numbers have doubled since last year! Scary! I am a little paranoid since when the baby's been sick so she's kissed and hugged all over me and yesterday I drank after the boy who I suspect has it as well. The Dr. said it's strep, but I'm afraid it's HFMD.

Anyways, have any of you ever had it? The symptoms usually show up within 2 days and people over 10 usually don't tend to get it like children. I figure by the morning I'll either have it or not. So far, I'm good! Also, you're not contagious after 24 hours and after the fever's gone. (Just a little tip.)

Any suggestions on relieving the poor children's pain? OTC meds are supposed to be good and after about 7-10 days you're better, unless you've got a different type of virus that can cause more serious damage.

Are any of you aware of the outbreak and has anyone been taking extra care to keep it away? I wish we'd have known it was HFMD season. To those of you like us, who weren't aware, definitely remember to keep the kids very clean and away from those who have it.

I've heard of plenty of other things, but never heard of this before. Perhaps we don't have that over here.

I don't have any experience with HFMD, but found this from the CDC site:

Can HFMD Be Treated?
There is no specific treatment for HFMD. Fever and pain can be managed with over-the-counter fever reducers/pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. In addition, individuals with HFMD should drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration (loss of body fluids).

Hope your children will get better soon!

Well thank you hon! It's strange how I came across your comment here. I had written this poll/discussion several hours ago, but didn't come back to check it. I had actually saw one of your discussions about getting to know people before getting into a relationship and liked what you said. So I went to your profile and followed ya & realized you're recent activity said you had left a comment here! How cool.

Anyways, your info was helpful and very correct too. That's exactly what my dr. papers said on the HFMD. I hate this stuff! Lol. Ibuprofen is good. I've been using motrin for now and tylenol, but the tylenol does not seem to be helping them at all! I'll pick up ibuprofen asap. The Dr. prescribed some meds for the girl, it has hydrocodone! Ahh! She's been feeling much better though. The others aren't as bad as she is so I think I'll just try OTC Ibuprofen like you suggested.

Oh, and lots of powerade! Lol. Thanks so much for your help.

Maybe not. I live in Georgia and I actually never heard of it until last year reading a medical book when the baby was first born. I never thought any of us would actually get it though! Lol. I sure hope no one else does.

I couldn't answer the poll, as I have my own children and although they have never had this illness, some of my friend's kids have, as have patients.

Basically, it runs it's course. It can be painful, so either OTC pain relievers or even a little codeine if the doctor wants to prescribe it can be used. I have friends who have used special mouth washes, used for mouth sores. Also, some people put liquid antacid on the sores to help protect them. Wear nytril or vinyl gloves while doing this and wrap any Q Tips used to apply medication, because adults can get it, even though they usually don't due to stronger immune systems than children have.)

It seems to occur in mini epidemics. We've had day care centers shut down in our area due to it (all the better IMO, as it's so contagious.) It's an enterovirus, distantly related to both chicken pox and polio. But, it is not as severe as either of these.

Some kids run a mild fever, make sure if the fever is high they see the doctor again, as your step kids could get bacterial infections in the sores. Just keep an eye on them. Avoid citrus fruit, too much salt and anything that will irritate the sores. Usually the situation runs it's course in a week to 10 days.

Also, keep them hydrated, sterilize cups, flatware, plates, bowls etc that they use. They shouldn't be kissing anyone until after the sores have healed. Bleaching sheets and pillowcases and cleaning pillows thoroughly is advised. Bleaching their underwear is a good idea, as many children will get the sores on their genitals, even if they don't it can still be transmitted via worn clothing in some cases. To be safe, bleach everything they come in contact with until the sores are healed.

I hope they feel better.

It's going around in a lot of the kids where I live so several of my friends kids, plus my ex's kids have had it already this season! It's rampant. I know my ex-husband had it when he was a child as well, but I don't remember it being as prevalent then. While luckily it is just a virus that will clear on it's own, it's still no fun at all and I hope your kiddo perks up again soon!!!

Ibuprofen is suppose to be better and safer for kids than Tylenol, hope it'll speed up relieving your children's discomfort.

Never had it that I know of, but I am sick right now with something. My legs ache and I'm coughing up a storm. Every now and then I get the chills. It's not a good feeling when it's 100 outside.

Not biological. There is a such thing as raising a child that isn't your biological child. What is it with everybody here having such an issue over that?

Thanks for the responses though. And yes, it's been months now, but everything is all cleared up. It was a miserable few weeks though!

It's been a long time since I posted the poll, but I'm here now!

I'm so sorry to hear that! That must be awful. You guys will be in my thoughts. I hope they find out the problem and fix him right up With the HFMD ours wouldn't eat for days either and I was getting very worried because that's highly unlike them! Lol. I thought it'd never end. The youngest, she ended up well in a few days, but the older (boy) was in pain for more than 2 weeks and had terrible mouth sores.

Yes, it is very scary when they get sick. I hate it. I sure hope things are all OK with yours by now. ...

I haven't had it, nor my kids but there was an outbreak at the preschool a few weeks ago and they sent a letter out informing us parents to be on the lookout.
