IUD's (standing for intrauterine device), discussed here are commonly used alternative form of birth control. Over the years their shaped and the material they are made of has changed, however, now it is common to think of an IUD as a small plastic (sometimes with copper) T-shaped device meant to prevent pregnancy.
In the US there are only two IUD's available (according to this article on ask.com): Mirena and ParaGard.
In 2003 came a substantially different type of IUD. GyneFix, the "frameless" IUD. The GyneFix come in two sizes, standard or mini, consisting of 6 or 4 copper beads that are 5mm long by 2.2mm wide, threaded onto a length of surgical thread. A knot at one end of the thread acts as an anchoring system at the top of the uterus.
Because it is fameless, and therefore can move with ones body due to its flexibility, GyneFix has a lower expulsion rate than the common IUD, and has a high continuation rate at 1 year (90%) due to few removals for complaints of bleeding or pain.
Also like the ParaGard, GyneFix can also be used as an emergency contraceptive if inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex.
How do you feel about the "frameless" IUD? Is this a product you think you would be interested in? Do you currently use GyneFix, or are considering getting it for yourself? How do you think this product compares to other IUD's available in your area?
Because it has fewer side effects than the common IUD, as well as it's interesting design, i have given much thought to getting this myself. Though being in the US, it will be a rather expensive procedure as i would have to travel out of state to get it done. A friend of mine got the procedure done in Canada back in April, for about the same cost as the implant or any other IUD on the market here, and love it.
