Have you ever felt that you were in need of a libido enhancer? Have you ever tried a pill that was intended to increase your libido? How did it work out for you?

Contributor: lexical lexical
I'm currently taking a class called Readings in Sociology, wherein my professor helped me design a special curriculum so I could read about society and sexuality, which is directly related to my future graduate studies in Human Sexuality. In reading the book, I came across something I'd never heard of...medications to treat "hypoactive sexual disorder" or "low libido" - the female versions of pills like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.

My questions are...

-Have you ever felt that you were in need of a libido enhancer?
-Have you ever tried a pill that was intended to increase your libido?
-How did it work out for you?

You may select multiple responses in the poll. Please only select one of the last two choices if you have indeed tried libido enhancing medications. Voting is private. Your screen name will not be displayed. Please discuss, if you are comfortable doing so!

Thank you!

I do not need an enhancer. My hormones are always in a frisky mood but I am curious about Zestra though.

There have supposed aphrodisiacs for millennium - none have been proven to work, so I have avoided the apparently false claims. If there is a real one out there - post a link, I'd be willing to give it a try!

Don't confuse ED drugs like Viagra and Cialis with aphrodisiacs - not the same thing. They don't change your mood - they just increase blood flow to 'smooth muscles' like in a penis. trivia - Viagra was discovered when erections were reported as a side effect of an investigatory heart medication - the heart is also considered a 'smooth muscle'.

I don't really fit into any of those categories. A couple years back, I would have felt like I could have used it, but it was the hormonal birth control killing it. Now that I'm off the birth control, I don't feel like I need it, but I still just recently finished trying some herbal libido enhancer. (Add Lib) It didn't work for me though it did give me more energy and relieved my stress a bit which did *lead* to more sex. However, I was really curious, and my curiosity is satiated now.

My take on these things? Nothing if ever just mental or just physical. You can take the drugs, and they will help the physical aspect, but you still have to mentally want it. You kinda have to be willing to help the drugs along.

I haven't ever needed it, but one of my exes convinced me to try "Horny Goat Weed" pills, which are supposed to increase libido in both men and women.

Neither of us noticed any difference, but it was kind of a stupid experiment, since we both had naturally high libidos.

My birth control pills sometimes make me feel like I could use something like this, but not all the time. I stopped taking them for a month and started back up and it hasn't been nearly as bad. I keep meaning to talk to my doctor about switching to something else, though.

When I'm on depo, my libido goes down a lot. But, I like the other effects of it.

Sometimes my drive will get quite low when I'm on my own, but it tends to go crazy when my boyfriend is around. If either of us took enhancers, we'd die of exhaustion!

My hubby used to work in a supplement/vitamin store (think GNC), and he routinely try stuff they sold so that he could speak knowledgeably about the products. He said pretty much anything you can find on the market to increase sex drive or things of that nature are complete garbage. The one exception being a root (IIRC) called Maca. After taking maca, he said he was horny pretty much 24/7. The maca he took came in powder filled jellcaps. He said many of the products out there that claim to increase sex drive contain maca, but not in a quantity that would have any kind of effect. It's only useful if it's the only ingredient.

Maca

I have felt the need but never used medications, I used herbals instead and vitamins. I think the only thing that has 'worked' for me has been l-arginine.

And for background info, I am a 23 year old female who takes no medication other than anti-anxiety meds when I have a panic attack, which is like once every couple of months. I am not on any other medications. My libido fizzled when I turned 20 and started birth control, which was Low Ogestrel. I was on it for 2 years, now have been off it about 2 years or going on 2 years, and still don't have the sex drive I once had. I am uncertain if the bc pills are the root of my cause or because I stopped going through puberty.

I've had people tell me I might just be asexual, but the thing with being asexual is that most don't care they are. I care I have no libido, and it strains my relationship with my bf.

I have also tried talking with doctors about my problem, but they refuse to do any tests and tell me I need anti-depressants. I have refused, I am not taking medications I don't need.

I always feel like I could use a little boost, but I'd never try any of that stuff. I can go months and months and months (probably years) with no sexual activities of any sort and not give it a second thought. :/

I have problems from time to time with my birth control stealing my sexual appetite, but usually it doesn't last long. Therefore I've thought about but never used anything to enhance my drive.

I have never used medications to enhance my libido. I am currently taking a herbal supplement to balance my hormones, and it also enhances my libido, and it's working wonderfully!
