I know many women sometimes have an unplesent sent. Let me know about your experiences with the "smelly fish" scent. My boyfriend told me a story about 2 girls who he tried to have sexual intercorse with and when the took off their panties and opened their legs the smell was unbearable. He was so mean he lied to one and said his mother was "on her way" home and the other one he told her straight up "Put your clothes back on go home, your pussy smells". He continued to make her feel bad by telling her how to wash her vagina with soap and telling her she needs to take care of her self because thats a big turn off and thats disgusting. The funny thing is after all of that they are still friends because the girl is his best friends sister. Anyways i've asked him if he's ever taken any "smell" on me because i dont want to be embarrassed like that but he said no. One day when we were taking on the phone and randomly he said that i was the cleanest girl he has ever talked to/been with. I felt good when he said that. But i wont say that i've NEVER taken a "smell" on myself because i have, i notice that i smell more atleast 2 weeks before my period and as my period comes it gets a little stronger. Sometimes i dont take any smell at all, im always paranoid so i always check. Also i noticed that your pubic hairs affect the smell. When i was younger maybe like 14 i hardly ever shaved maybe once in a while and the smell was ever so often, i also hated the fact that when i got my period it was very uncomfortable to clean myself, so i started to shave every once in a while and i noticed that the smell was less when i shaved than when i didnt shave. As i got older (im 19 now) i shaved more often and now im 19 every little hair i see sticking out i run for cover and get the razor. I noticed a BIG difference. I hardly ever take a "fishy" smell, But its not only about shaving its about taking care of your selfs and showering regularly and properly. I was just wondering if anybody else has a story similar to mine?
Do you smell like Fish?

That "fishy smell" your boyfriend noticed is a medical condition called bacterial vaginosis. Any woman can get it at any time and there is no discernible cause. It doesn't have anything to do with being dirty, unclean or promiscuous. Though, it most likely is due to an imbalance in the pH of a woman's vagina, especially during or directly after menstruation.

I can understand, And that is very informative. So thank you. This actually helps me understad what the cause is. So Thank You!

Oh and here's a fun fact: Fresh fish has almost no smell whatsoever. It's only rotting fish that smells, and if your vagina smells like rotting fish, then it's probably a really good sign that something is off and you need to get to the OB/GYN. Again, it has nothing to do with cleanliness or how often you shave or how much hair is there.
Tampons were the bane of my existence for many, many years until I was able to figure out that the absorbency was much too strong, even with light tampons, for my body. I went through years of agonizing embarrassment before I figured it out. Since I ditched the tampons, I've been fine.

No, and I never have. I've also never had bacterial vaginosis...

I've never smelled like fish. It does have a light smell, like onions/spice, but neither of my lovers have complained about it.

I've never smelled like fish, and like Sapphire Storm said, that's a sign of an infection. My vagina does have a light smell, like a mixture of sweet, salty, and tangy. I don't find it unpleasant, I actually think it smells pretty good.

they say that the fishy smell stems from having a bacteria infection.I have never noticed a fishy smell but you are right there is a stronger smell a couple weeks before my period. That is because that is when you are ovulating. When you ovulate you tend to have a stronger smell, and I agree with the shaving part.I do get a slight smell if I dont shave. But I think that is also all part of the whole bacteria thing.Because pubic hair is meant to collect bacteria and protect your goods from bacteria getting in.I dont really understand why though when you shave there isnt as much noticeable smell because then it goes on your skin.Either way I shave completely because I am paranoid as well about smelling! But the smell isnt fishy its just a stronger smell.

It also happens to some women who get the IUD. BV can creep up and cause the smell. One of my roommates who was a very clean and fit person had this issue when she got it, and she wound up taking it out because she said it was "effing" up her sex game! LOL. She said sometimes, other people can't smell it, but as it's your own body, you can smell it on yourself.

I have had the pleasure to taste 13 different women and not 1 of them smelled like fish lmao. They ranged from a light sweaty smell to semi sweet always very nice. Oh and man the smell def gets intense before and after period drives me pretty wild tbh smells freaking amazing kind of divine >.>
08/19/2011
like sapphire said, that's the sign of a bacterial infection. i've never had BV so i've never smelled like fish

I don't shave and I don't smell like fish down there. If I did, I'd probably go to the doctor.
The only people I hear talking about a fishy odor are men who do not have sex with women (and therefore have not spent a lot of time around vaginas)!

Exactly. The occurrence of bacterial vaginosis has no connection to whether a woman shaves her pubic hair or not. SS is right that it also has no connection to being dirty or clean. Washing TOO much or with harsh soaps or using douches can actually cause bacterial vaginosis.

These women had an infection, (either that or that boy had very little experience with vaginas as, Eden C said) and IMO, it was rude for someone to say, "Go home, your pussy stinks." That poor girl probably has a complex for life.
I think someone with knowledge needs to set your boyfriend straight. I hope he never has some kind of infection and someone accusing him of being dirty.

Bacterial vaginosis is usually the reason for the "fishy" smell. It's because the infection in your body. Yes, I've had it a few times. I also noticed certain medications can cause the smell to be off too. I found if I take fish oil the smell is horrible and even I cringe at the smell. You need a medication to take away the smell and infection. I found out that shaving helps get rid of smells too. Hair on the vagina can hold smells and keep them closer to the body.

My scent changes somewhat over time, but never do I recall smelling fishy. Which is lovely, coz on and off I've wondered whether I had bacterial vaginosis since I'm sometimes feeling irritated, but not smelling makes me feel like it had to be some other culprit.
08/21/2011
My partner says he has never smelled anything on mine and I haven't either, but I am a paranoid about it so I check too. I've never noticed thank God! But I have heard people talk about vagina's with unbearable odors and fishy smelling, but I don't think that's true. I dont know, but could someone REALLY smell that bad? Maybe if they've not showered or taken care of themselves at all, but I just wonder if it's possible to have a scent besides a slight musk or a slight scent of your own. I've smelled blood before (the metallic scent) and went to the bathroom quite a few times when I used to have a period) and would have a huge leak! It wasnt pleasant, but it smelled just like a very bad cut does when it bleeds. I had extremely heavy periods though so that may be why the blood smelled so very strong. Other than that, I haven't noticed. I have smelled a not so pretty sweaty smell on a woman there before. It smelled like arm pits only lighter. That isn't good, but that's mostly caused by hair that harbors sweat and bacteria. I've never smelled anything besides blood on me though. If there's no infection or anything I really don't know if I believe a woman can smell putrid or fishy or anything that would be nasty or unbearable.. Not saying I'm right, but I do wonder.

ive had bv and i hated it. so many have it but not too many talk about it, why?

I am anal retentive about odors. If I've sweat a lot I might smell but not fishy, more musky and sweat.
The only time I've ever smelled remotely fishy I had eaten seafood about every other night for a several weeks. Even then it wasn't strong.
The smell does vary in intensity depending on activity level and the time of month, but mostly I smell musky, sometimes though after we have had sex I smell like pool water. 0.o

My vagina smells like a vagina, as well it should. If it smelled like a fish, I would go for the antibiotics. If it smelled like flowers, I'd wonder who the hell'd been shoving flowers up my pussy. I have an ovulation scent that's sorta spicy sweet, and apparently it drives my lover wild. He likes how I smell.
12/02/2011
Somehow, I've become horribly paranoid about my scent. Even if I've just showered, I worry. I don't have a strong or foul smell, just a somewhat musky scent... But I always worry that it's unpleasant.

If you smell like fish, talk to a doctor about it.
Simple enough, it's not supposed to do that lol
