Have you been diagnosed with Celiac Disease?

Contributor: K101 K101
Just curious if anyone here suffers from Celiac disease? Celiac disease and IBS have very similar symptoms and before the doctors I had seen found out what my problems were, we were afraid it might be Celiac. Turned out to be endometriosis and IBS and I suffered so much and I remember being so ill, but so relieved that it was not Celiac even though IBS is very extreme and in my case debilitating. While IBS and Celiac disease have such similar symptoms, (so similar in fact that patients are often misdiagnosed)Celiac disease is forever and IBS can actually go away.

I had gotten sick again for the first time in months yesterday and had these things on my mind a lot. I just wanted to ask if anyone here suffers from Celiac and if so, did you suffer through symptoms and eventually get diagnosed or was the disease discovered during an unrelated doctor visit? I know some people are diagnosed without major symptoms during an exam or something else.

If you do have Celiac disease, how do you manage? Do you stay ill a lot? I know Celiacs have to stay on a 100% gluten-free diet, which I couldn't imagine, but I am curious to hear how you get along with it. I haven't known anybody else with severe stomach problems so I kinda went through mine alone and get curious about other's similar problems. Having really bad problems like IBS, Celiac, Ulcerative Colitis, etc. are so terribly hard to live with and since I didn't know anybody dealing with any kind of stomach issues, it was scary to be so alone going through it.

You don't have to share your stories or personal experience with me, but if you do, I always appreciate it

I have IBS, it is fairly manageable unless I get stressed. Then all bets are off!! I tend to regulate it with my diet, the pills made me have other issues. I was diagnosed many years ago when I was suffering with endometriosis.

My hubby is gluten free, and he looks and feels a lot better than he did when he wasn't. I am not, but sometimes I go a week without gluten, and my bowels are more frequent and less painful... I probably should be 100% to be honest, but it is very hard since I travel so much.

Good luck with the appointment. I hope you get some questions answered. Thinking about you!

Celiac is a serious, very painful, hard to manage disease, and it is lifelong. Sadly, it is an "in" diagnosis that people often make themselves. In order to be positively diagnosed with non-sprue Celiac, you must have an intestinal biopsy. This, along with an anti-gliadin antibody test is really the only way to get proper diagnosis and treatment.

A biopsy alone needs to be done more than once, as dairy allergy or even intestinal viruses can flatten villi to the point where it looks like Celiac. So usually at least 2 or 3 tests at different times, plus an anti-body test need to be performed.

Celiac cannot be diagnosed by symptoms alone. There are too many GI illnesses that have similar symptoms and avoiding all gluten when you don't medically need to isn't the best health choice.

Really? What harm can avoiding gluten really do, though? I did for years before I finally got the antibody test which showed an intolerance. I simply noticed that I reacted poorly to wheat--headaches, fatigue, etc. I'm glad I listened to my body instead of doing it unneeded harm just because "everybody else" eats wheat.

Fortunately, I do not have Celiacs. It is a terrible condition.

I have not been diagnosed with Celiac but I do have stomach problems. When I eat too many gluten products I get really sick. When I stay on a gluten free diet my health improves greatly and I feel like I have more energy/ I get sick less often.
