Cervical Cancer Caused by Cunnilingus?

Contributor: kck kck
Hmmm... I just read an article that says more and more studies in the US and Europe are linking cervical cancer to oral sex, because the partners giving oral have cancerous infections of HPV ("A third of head and neck cancers we see nowadays are HPV"). The article asserts that more and more doctors and medical journals are finding the same results, leading experts to believe their is a direct link between ovarian cancer and oral sex with a partner infected with upper-body HPV.

Just thought I'd share.

I think if the studies are correct then that flat-out sucks. But studies are often wrong, and even when they are right it seems like cancer can be linked to almost any act, any food, any drug these days... I'm not necessarily a big risk taker but when it comes to studies like this one, I honestly doubt it will change my actions at all. I try to live as healthily and carefully as I can (within reason - I still like my junk food and the occasional day of total slackdom) and am hoping it will pay off.

I agree it does seem like everything causes cancer these days. They might as well give us all portable cancer testers and we can test our partners for everything before we decide if we want to sleep with them or not. I doubt anyone is going to stop performing oral sex because of a cancer risk. At best people are concerned more with catching HIV/AIDS. Once they've tested for that they're pretty much good to go. Everything is a risk and everyone just has to decide what type of risks they're willing to take with their bodies.

Well, HPV is bad. And quite common. Most women who have it don't even KNOW they have it. A woman needs to be responsible and get her health checked, especially if she's sexually active. This article is kind of scary, and I think women who have HPV have a responsibility to inform their partners they have it. I have a friend with HPV who never tells anyone she has it and has sex with several men. Her reasoning is that she got it from one of them, so they don't deserve the truth. That's wicked. Now they all may have it

LOLLLLLL!!!!

Well the number of partners also has an influence, and maybe if all of them perform oral sex, will that double your risks?

Research has found a number of factors that add up to make women at more risk: sex at an early age, multiple partners, exposure to HPV, etc.

Call it old age, but I just can't bring myself to get worried about this. HPV is NOT a new virus, but since they do have a fancy "vaccine" for it now they've made it as public as possible and are playing it for all it's worth. They had to find a new way to keep women running to the gyn every 6-12 months since the standards changed to every 3 years for paps. And if you do some serious digging into some medical journals, it's been proven many times that HPV does not cause cancer anyway... HPV *with* several other factors combined do.

I'd be more worried about getting cancer from the crap they put in our foods and hygiene products than from oral sex.

My gyno said the standard is still every year. Or is it an age limit? Like, every 3 years for older women or something?

Here ya go, from the National Cancer Institute:

I think the CDC had it posted for awhile too. There were a lot of studies done before they set the new guideline, and if you dig around the 'Net a bit you can probably still find them. Some doctors may be slow to pass that info to their patients though, particularly if they aren't comfortable with it.

So glad I got vaccinated. Just wish they would require it for males, too, especially considering - gasp! - not everyone is straight.
