Bleeding after sex.... should I be concerned?

Contributor: Sanjay Sanjay
I noticed that I bleed a little after sex (or particulaly textured dildos) nearly 100% of the time. I asked my gyno about this a couple of years ago and she asked me in return "well, do you have rough sex?" I wasn't really sure how to respond because I think what I would consider "rough" is different compared to other peoples' definition. She said "rough" was just very hard thrusting, which if that is all it is, then I guess it is pretty rough... but I would just call it passionate!

I get my yearly check up and I've never hada anything beyond a simple yeast infection every now and again show up on the tests. Should I be concerned about this? When I say "bleeding" I mean a little blood shows up when I wipe, nothing gushing or anything like that!

I had that for years and it turned out to be a polyp on my cervix. They removed it and I haven't had any problems since. But it's usually not really a big deal.

Is this something that was found out during a yearly exam?

No, I had to have my cervix inspection because my pap came back slightly abnormal. She found it when she used to scope. So she removed it and biopsied a couple of other areas to make sure everything was alright. But she did ask me when she saw the polyp if I had spotting after sex. And when I told her I did, she said that was the cause. But I have heard that strong thrusting, probably hitting the cervix during sex, can cause some spotting as well.

I have had the same thing. I also have a vagina that would be considered by conventional standards pretty "tight" and narrow. When I first started having sex with my current partner I bled for a few weeks --just spotting, not gushing, just as you described. I asked my gynecologist and she said it was fine. She basically told me that vaginae are all special unique snowflakes, and that some are naturally broader and more elastic. Mine is more narrow and less elastic. She said as long as I listened to my body and didn't do things that hurt myself that it would be okay, and after a few weeks I would begin to accommodate my new partner, which I did. The spotting stopped, although after particularly rough sex I still have it sometimes.

If you continue to spot for several weeks I would return to your gynecologist and ask for more thorough examination. However, I am NOT a doctor in anyway. This is just my opinion which comes from my own personal experience. There are a lot of reasons why you could be spotting, I'm just suggesting one possibility.

I appreciate your input. I had mentioned to my doctor before and she seemed to think it wasn't a big deal, but that was almost a year ago and I'm still having consistant spotting (and with the same man, who might be a bit thicker than average but it seems like I should have grown accustomed to it by now!) I've got an appointment scheduled for my annual exam in a few weeks so I figure I can just ask then.

If my cervix gets hit hard during thrusting or my partner uses a rigid toy on me, I do spot at times. I just find my cervix being impaled so uncomfortable and the spotting says to me, "go easy"!

I think that if you're posing the question to a gyno they would be able to rule out a lot of causes based on any results you have back etc. But for anyone who does not get checked up for stds etc, just one important factor to consider is the possibility of chlamydia. Rule it out, it is often silent and can cause infertility. link

Where is the bleeding coming from? Is it when you wipe, or do you find it later, spotting your underwear/panty liner?

What color is the blood, bright red or darker brown?

If it's bright red when you wipe, odds good that he's bigger than average and you got stretched just a bit too much than you could reasonably allow for. It happens, and if it doesn't cause you discomfort or pain, more power to you. I'll occasionally have to forgo day-after sex when it happens to me, since it stings.

If it's darker brown and showing up later or mixed among your fluids (e.g. sperm, vaginal discharge), it's coming from further inside, and may be some spotting between periods (also pretty common) or as someone else mentioned, it could be a polyp. If you're not having any pain, cramping or other symptoms, you're probably fine.

If you've mentioned it to your doctor you're already ahead of the game. If you want to play it safe (always a good idea) and ask for a few extra tests, go for it.
