Just curious. It actually has a failure rate of 1.2% over the span of 5 years. I was a little surprised it was this high. But I still think I would trust it. It would be much lower with both partners sterilized. But it is a little less safe for females to have done.
Would you use sterilization as your sole birth control?

Got it done, survived, good to go. And it also depends on the competency of the surgeon and the method of severing.
What about after five years?

My husband had a vasectomy several years ago so we wouldn't have to mess with birth control or worry about a late-in-life surprise pregnancy.

I would trust it, but I also assume that 10 years from now when we're ready for it it'll be a bit more effective.
08/14/2012
I decided that it wasn't effective enough for myself to consider having surgery for. However, my hubby is going Friday for the referral to a Dr to do the vasectomy.

Might seem like a high rate, but when you take into account the failure rate of other contraceptive methods, sterilization is statistically lower than most other forms.
Check it out: Failure rate of oral contraceptives for one year is .1% in laboratory settings up to 5% in typical use.
And the failure rate for male condoms without spermicide is 3% when used perfectly to 14% in typical use.
In both forms of sterilization, the failure rate for one year is not even more than 1%. In other words, you're good.
I might as well get my tubes tied if I'm over 30 and safe from baby rabies, if I have the money.

I wouldn't
08/14/2012
I would.
08/14/2012
Yes I would
08/14/2012
I would love to get a vasectomy.
08/14/2012
I would trust it.
08/14/2012
Not as the moment, as I think I'd like to have kids someday, but I'd consider it in the future.
08/15/2012
I don't have any interest in doing it.
08/15/2012
I wouldn't
08/15/2012
I would SO LOVE to just magically be sterile, but tubal ligation is not something I'm up for right now (and not something a doctor would give me, most likely).
08/15/2012
I would probably trust it.
08/15/2012
Once I've had kids, I'd probably be content to use sterilization as my birth control.
08/17/2012
Once my husband and I have kids, he might get a vasectomy.

Not gonna lie...kinda freaks me out to have something so permenant. I have and IUD and love it. No problems and no accidents for going on over 3 years. Depending on the brand, they are good for either 5 or 10. I have Mirena, which is good for 5. Added bonus with that one...pretty much no period...do still get moody, but I haven't bought tampons or pads in three years. Word! The copper IUD is a different story...lasts 10 years, but can give cramps and heavier periods.
08/17/2012
I did! I made the appointment to get his vasectomy!!!
09/04/2012
Yes, but I'd like to have one or two kids first.
11/18/2012
I always saw that as the point of sterilization--to stop using all forms of contraception.
11/18/2012
never considered it but probably not.
02/24/2013
Probably not
02/27/2013
Yes, down the road I'll probably consider it.
03/01/2013
I don't think I would.
