Sexis: Ignorance is bliss.

Most people with STD have no clue. The hospital I work at, we birth about 80 or so babies everyday. We live on a small, overpopulated island. Condoms cost about 10 bucks for 2 dozen quality ones at Walmart. Yet no one buys them. Or free at clinics. Almost all our pregnancies are unplanned and up to half the moms come in with a treatable disease. (Trich and Chlamydia, chlamydia being numero uno). Let's face it, people hump like rodents. They don't use condoms, they don't want to "interupt the passion" as one person put it.
Is sex really more important than health?
Your partner may not know if they are clean. Besides, more than half the dults out their have human papilloma virus or herpes zoster 2, or both. It can be prevented. So yes, it really is their fault. On both parties. If you are not intending to conceive with a particular person, caveat emptor. Cover up. You can treat gonorrhea easily enough, but hep B, hep C, HIV, HPV, HSV2 are yours forever even if the person looks absolutely healthy. Don't trust. People lie. Remember Dr House's adage: "Everyone lies. Even fetuses lie."

Thanks for this post. It really reminds me that I need to get tested as I never have. I have to go in for a pelvic exam this winter and will probably go into the Planned Parenthood for it and ask about STD testing as well. Or maybe I'll call tomorrow and ask if I can just do an STD test. It's within walking distance of my campus even though it's a little creepy around that area. I'll carry my Pure Wand as protection!

People do lie. I caught Trich from someone years ago who swore up and down he had been tested for EVERYTHING and was clean. Even after I called and told him, he was 100% positive it wasn't him. This was in spite of being told that I had not had sex with anyone else in over 2 years and been tested myself, in the mean time.

By the way, we used a condom; it broke. :\ There are no 100% guarantees offered with condom use. Will your luck be as bad as mine? Probably not.

But people lie and condoms break.

Trich is a sneaky bastard. I had to get treated once for it because the girl I was with was really dirty down there. A week of antibiotics and everything was good.

Untreated it, like chlamydia, can cause PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). This is the leading cause of ectopic pregnancies -which are very serious because a tube can burst, infection and blood can fill the pelvic cavity.

Condoms need to be applied properly and kept well lubed. Still, they are better than nothing and extremely effective for preventing disease.

So here I am, still not tested. I called PP, but a full spectrum test was going to cost around $200. I just don't have that. So I've been calling the public health dept. that does it for free, but they haven't had a time that lines up with my class schedule yet.

Yes, use protection. Condoms are not the only kind you need if you want extremely low risk. Even oral sex is risky. What is really comes down to is an acceptable level of risk ~for you~.

I believe in the importance of getting tested regularly (but it's free here in Canada) in practicing fairly safe sex (condoms, knowing the history of partners, making informed choices) but you still should recognize there is always a level of risk involved in sex just by the very nature of it. I opt to mitigate risks that could end in death. Most std's cause discomfort but won't kill you.

Bottom line is never be complacent about your own health.

Or Trust but verify?

It just breaks your heart to see the aftermath of unsafe sex practices, I applaud you for sticking it out and continuing to clock in every day.

I have something crazy to tell you. I went to the obgyn and I go every 6 months. I always ask to get tested for everything as she gives me the eye I asked for a HIV test and she told me why are you asking for that test you been with the same person for along time and it always come back the same does he use drugs or needles I was like no SHE told me then you don't need the test then. She was so out of her mind I got a new ob the next day. Just get tested for everything be smart

I get tested if I do anything with a new person. And I'm ridiculous, I almost demand bloodwork to know they're not STD-ridden. It sounds crazy but hey, I haven't caught an STD because I'm so careful. I believe House, everyone does lie!

No you are not ridiculous. I was "dating" 35 years ago, and was submitting to, and having new partner tested every time before starting any new intimate relationship. Love may be transient, but an STD can be "forever". Was not worth it then...or now.

Truth Misha....indeed, truth. However, according to a speaker I just heard, in sub Saharan Africa, where the rate of HIV infection is TEN TIMES what it is anywhere else on the planet, condoms were made available FREE by the bucket full, in stores, clinics, and multiple public places as part of a World Health Organization initiative. He said that after weeks, those "buckets" were still FULL. No one seemed interested..even with lessons on HOW and WHY. Human nature is the worst thing to try and overcome.
