I always hear from many women that they gained a lot of weight after taking birth control pills. Is there any truth to this?
Do birth control pills really cause you to gain weight?

My first try with birth control pills, I was prescribed a tri-phasic pill and my body did not like that one bit. I had CRAZY mood swings, suicidal thoughts, and I gained 20 lbs. Of course, I don't blame all of this solely on the pills since a few weeks after I started the pill, I lost my best friend. I'm sure my grief did contribute in a large way to my symptoms. However, when I stopped taking the pills a few weeks later, my mood swings and suicidal thoughts stopped immediately. I also stopped gaining weight.
I can't really say if my 20 lb weight gain was from the pill or my grief.
When I started taking my current monophasic pill, I had absolutely no side effects. No weight gain, no mood swings, nothing. It's nice

Not necessarily. What they do is cause cravings. It really depends on your self control.

I am not on birth control pills but I am on the depo shot. I have never had a issue with my weight being on it, but know some people who said they have had issues.

When I started taking the pill I got really irritable and gained about 20 lbs. I was then switched to a low estrogen pill and that put me back to normal. I know a few friends who also happened to gain a bit of weight when starting the pill too. Hormones can do crazy things. Part of it might be caused by appetite being affected or water retention.

I have been on them for years and I can say that it's true that I have gained weight, but not TONS of weight. I gained around 5 pounds the first few months then lost it after I controlled my urges to just randomly eat and snack. I am on the low version of my pills, which I think it better but hasn't affected me a whole lot.

I've been on the pill for six months and although I haven't gained weight, I'm not losing weight as easily anymore.

They cause some slight increase in water gain. So you can gain 1-2 pounds in water, but this goes away quickly. So no they do not

I'm not sure. I have heard both, from friends.

I didn't gain weight but I'm pretty fit and watch what I eat.

Nope

I've been on ... six? seven? different kinds of birth control pills, not counting generic vs name brands of the same one. I'd have to say it's not really predictable! There are probably some that are more or less likely to cause weight gain, but it's such an individual thing. I've gained weight, lost weight, stayed the same, gained weight only in my boobs, had the gain or loss only last for x amount of time - you name it!

I've never been on pills myself, but I hadn't heard of weight gain from others before so I can't really comment.

I haven't with the pill. I've heard that depo is the only hormonal birth control method with published data that links it to weight gain.

I've been on Depo Provera for about 7 years due to having endometriosis and it never caused me weight gain.

It really depends on the pill they put you on and your own body. I was on a low-estrogen pill and I never gained weight.

I just gain boob, at an uncomfortably fast rate when I first started.

I gained since starting years ago, but I don't know if it's directly related.

I gain weight while on the pill.

Yes, it made me gain weight and it made my complexion much worse. But it's different for everyone.
