Smoking Partners

Contributor: Two2Tango Two2Tango
My husband smokes and has done so from before we got together. I put up with it, but when it comes to sex, I really find if the cigarette smell is strong on him, its a turn off. Its only been a problem a handful of times over the last 10 years, but can happen. Am wondering how many here smoke or have a partner who does, and does it affect your sexlife?

Sorry, after posting realized I forgot to add one in for couples that don't smoke. Maybe we should get an edit option to fix such problems.

My partner doesn't smoke, but he sometimes hangs out with his friends while they're smoking. When he comes home smelling of smoke, I make him shower before we have sex. It's a huge turn-off for me, partly because it triggers my asthma. Gasping, wheezing, choking, and reaching for my inhaler is NOT sexy.

I don't have asthma but I did as a child. Smoke makes me gag and choke even now. I'm extremely sensitive to it. I don't smoke nor does my partner.

Neither of us smoke, but I've somehow gotten sensitive to smoke, and if he's around someone that was smoking, I can tell from his clothes/hair.. it's a bit of a turn off if the smell is too noticeable/strong..

I've never smoked but I've always been sensitive to the smell. A lot of people are.

And a lot of people aren't. I've seen people who don't smoke but aren't bothered by second-hand smoke. To each is own I guess

Thanks for taking interest. I guess for most who have never smoked it would be harder to put up with a partner who does, as well as those like mentioned with asthma. But 90% of the time, the smell of smoke isn't strong on him luckily.

I'm not a smoker, but he is. We're working on helping him quit, but it's a process. At first, I was ok with it, but as time drags on, his quitting has gravitated to the top of our to-do list. It's just unhealthy, unnecessary, and expensive.

I’m militant anti-tobacco so one of my requirements for a panther is that she be a non-smoker. I don’t care how hot, attractive, intelligent, or otherwise desirable you are this is non-negotiable. If every women where magical transformed into a smoker tomorrow, well it a good thing I like sex toys because I’d never be able to have heterosexual sex again. It can be turn-off just being around a non-smoker who friends smoke heavily the smell can stick to clothing hair etc.

I have a little *thing* for smoking - possibly borderline fetish in certain aspects. Its far too complicated and beyond the scope of this discussion to get into here, but with regards to what the poll is asking, every once in a while, I enjoy smoking cigarettes. Once I'm done, however, I hate the smell on me. This translates to others - I hate the smell of a freshly consumed cigarette one someone - grosssssssssssssss - and I have certainly met heavy enough smokers that would be entirely off limits for making out with because of that. BUT no I don't mind if someone I'm with likes to enjoy the occasional smoke, be it a cigarette, pipe, cigar, or hookah.

This issue also helps me filter people in the opposite way as well. If I observe someone reacting frantically and insistently to the fact that someone has just smoked (when the smell to me seems extremely light) or is smoking, it's a decent indicator that that person and I won't get a long. Not an absolute rule or anything, and there's plenty that can override it, but yeah...

(and no, this is so not directed to any previous commentors, I am not making judgment calls based on random internet comments, just sharing my thoughts is all)

I don't smoke, but sometimes my boyfriend asks me too, because it turns him on for some reason.

Smoking doesn't bother me but coffee is another story. I hate the smell of it anywhere anytime, and if he's been drinking it I won't kiss him. To each his own.

I did smoke, and my current partner is actually the one who got me to stop. Then after I did, she got upset because she likes how it smells on me. After stopping though, something clicked in me and I'm not going to start again. For me, I do not like it if other people smoke, I find it unattractive, which is why I'm not going back to that.

My partner smokes and has since we met. It is such a turn off to me that I can hardly stand it. Both knowing what he's doing to his health and the way it makes smell are just beyond gross.

I needed an other catagory. We both used to smoke and for quite a while I found it a perverse sort of turn on. I liked the smell of tobacco and he ALWAYS had a cigarette in his hand. Then we quit, it was a spur of the moment thing. We wanted to set a better example for our kids, the doctor was blunt and told Sigel he was dying and if he didn't quit we'd bury him within the year, and the pricve of cigrettes got outrageous.

Now I can't stand the smell and when he comes home from an install at someone's house who smokes he heads for the shower and washes his clothing because the smell is stomach turning. We never noticed how pervading it is until we quit.

I need another category as well. Cigarette smoke makes me ill. Not just nauseous, actually ill. If I'm around it for 5 minutes (sometimes less) outside, my throat hurts the next day. More than 5 minutes, or even a shorter length of time in a small space, and I get a cold. The stench of it on someone's clothes is often enough.

I've never dated a smoker. Nor would I.

The terrible part about being a smoker/dating a smoker is once you get used to the smell of it in your clothes, hair, bedding, furniture, etc., you don't really notice it any more. Your nose becomes so desensitized that you can't pick it up and so you have no idea how gross you smell to other people. The boyfriend quit smoking a while back, and just last week we were airing out some old sheets and they REEKED. We were both so surprised because we had gotten used to the stench and had no idea how strong it had been to everyone else all along.

I do sometimes smoke, but rarely. SO when he does and we get in that mood, it can be a real turn off. Normally he’ll spray or something and Ill have to give him gum or make him brush his teeth...

My partner smoked cigarettes when I met him but he was in the process of quitting. He quit for a long time. I only smoke cigars. He would smoke them with me on occasion. Now that he smokes the occasional cigarette again (usually accompanying drinking), I won't kiss him if he tastes like it. He knows this and the consequences of it so it isn't a problem and rarely tastes or smells like it.

I have always been with guys who thought smoking was gross and appreciated that I had no interest in it. I don't ever smoke cigarettes and my partner likes the smell of my flavored cigars. So it hasn't been an issue there either. Guys find it sexy that I smoke hoogies .

I could never be with someone that smoked so much that their life smelled of cigarettes too-Those people that their clothing smells like cigarettes even if they haven't smoked that day etc. Cigarettes also decrease your libido and can make you less sexually sensitive. I have no interest in cigarettes and personally find habitually smoking of them gross.

I smoke, but not very much. I actually have the only car out of all my smoking friends that doesn't smell at all like smoke, and that compliment came from non-smokers, lol.

He doesn't mind really, and since I never really reeked of smoke, it was always just a light scent mixed in with my regular scent he always found it just a bit endearing. Weird, but cute I guess, lol.

My fiance's last two girlfriends drove him to smoke in secret. He finally quit and he's said that he'd like me to quit for health reasons, but since I don't go through more than a pack a week he doesn't heckle me too much, lol

I'm in the process of quitting still. I quit last Dec. I've had a few bumps in my road. The biggest motivator to quit, for me, was the return of things called "taste buds". My sense of smell and taste really came back after I quit.

The biggest thing is that you can ONLY quit when you're ready. If you aren't ready, it won't stick.

Oh I know that. And I get torn, because I know I should just give it up entirely for my health, and I can go days at a time without having one and not have a problem with it, but at the same time, I don't seem to smoke enough to have it affect how I'm tasting things, and I really really enjoy that first cigarette after a few drinks, lol.

I've still got a fairly sensitive sense of smell, and I can pick smokers out of a crowd with relative ease. I'll definitely quit while I'm pregnant, but until then, I'm not sure, lol.

I'm in a bit of a mixed situation. I find it sexy to watch my partner smoke (really just like watching him to anything with his mouth... ) and have never minded the smell (grew up with smokers), but that is irrelevant to my desire for him to quit. I'd much rather lose the little joy of watching him smoke than watch him battle lung cancer or emphysema to an early death.

I once dated a guy who really got turned on by watching women smoke.

I've smoked on and off for years. It bothers me when I can smell it really strongly, like if they were in a car with the windows shut/mostly shut and smoking.
