Sometimes its so hard it hurts. Anyway to prevent it without causing any damage?

I think fully emptying the bladder at night, and not going to bed partially or fully aroused might help.

Actually, it's quite healthy for you. Erections during REM and "morning wood" help strengthen the muscles and tissues in the pelvic floor and penis. Not having an erection when you wake up and your bladder is full is something that doctors want you to notify them about as it can be a sign of serious illnesses such as testicular cancer and prostate cancer.
You're at an age where your erections have never been more persistent or stronger and it will ease up as you get older and you won't get as hard as you do now. You can try minimizing the pain with a topical cream that desensitizes your penis or take an OTC painkiller right when you wake up.
If it is truly so painful that you can't masturbate or urinate to make the erection go away, then talk to a urologist and see if they can help.

Thanks Stormy for the info. I would have had no idea that morning wood is an indicator of health... the canary in the coal mine so to speak. Good to know!
