So in October of last year the FDA approved the use of Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, in boys and men ages 9 to 26 for the prevention of genital warts. I thought this was amazing news, but I was disappointed that I found out about it seven months after the fact (and I only found out about it because I'm doing research for a paper on the use of the vaccine in women ages 25-45). I really wanted to share this news with the community just so everyone knows about it.
Here is one news article I found.
Gardasil can protect against not only the two strains that cause 90% of genital warts, but also the two strains that cause 70% of cervical cancer. Giving this vaccine to boys and men would not only meet its indication of preventing genital warts, but it could stop the spread of cervical cancer-related strains to women. We could potentially wipe out a vast majority of HPV and cervical cancer.
That said, to the men out there: will you get vaccinated? And to the parents: will you get your son(s) vaccinated?
If anyone's interested in safety and efficacy studies, I'm sure I can dig something up. I have subscriptions of several medical journals through my school.
