How big of an age gap is too big?

Contributor: hybridinsurge hybridinsurge
I've been involved with a man 16 years older than me for a little over a year and some of my friends and family are still wigged out about it. I'm curious what others think about sizable age differences between romantic and/or sexual partners.

How big of an age gap between partners do you think is absolutely unacceptable?

Not unacceptable.. but I think it gets awkward 25+ for sure. That is me having intimate relations with my parents. No thanks.

For me personally, I wouldn't date anyone over 6 or 7 years. But to each their own.

It really does't matter. As long as the younger one is not a minor.

I am 24 and I prefer men much older than me. The way I see it is that usually older men tend to know what they want in their potential mates, which is why I date men that are at least 30 or up. Of course, that's just my view due to my experiences.

I wouldn't say unacceptable but it gets to a point that you are part of a different generation than your partner is and things are just different.

As long as both partners are above 18, consenting, and at similar places in their lives (maturity wise, etc), I think any age is fine. I know a girl who's, I think, 21, and her boyfriend is 63... And no, he's not her sugar daddy or anything, lol. I can see how people would think that's bizarre, but they seem to be very happy and making it work, so who cares?

I myself have an age range that I won't date but everyone else can date whatever age range they want. I don't think any one should be judge at all on it.

Not gonna make rules for anyone else, but age gaps shrink as one ages.

I just met someone with a seven-year age gap (me: late twenties, them mid-thirties) and for the first time that's no big deal. (I tended to like people within 2-3 years of me; I didn't like the notion of an older person bossing me around before I had my bearings.)

I was gonna vote 10, because, for example, if I was dating someone ten years younger or my daughter was dating someone ten years older, I'd probably be super pissed or feel weird about myself. But, when I examine the age 20 and 30, I think, why not?

So 15 would be the limit for me.

It depends.. Age is just a number. Relationships are not about age but rather many different things such as compatibility, where both people are at in their lives, common interests and love certainly does not discriminate against age.

The largest age gap I've ever had was 18 years. It very very recently ended but not because of the age issue, it was due to him lying and being a hypocrite.

It doesn't so much matter about the age spread so much as what ages each party is. 10 year gap at 15 and 25 is too much to me, but 25 and 35 seems just find.

As long as the younger one is 18, then the age gap doesn't matter. What matters is the maturity level. We know a very mature 19 year old, and she is exactly 30 years younger than my wife (same birthday), and she is a wonderful person in our life. The 30 year age difference makes no difference in our respective maturity levels.

As long as both adults are 18+ then it's none of my business.

I don't see a reason why anyone should put a limit on it. I personally wouldn't be with someone more than 10 years older, but that doesn't mean it's wrong for someone else to be.
