Would you be in favor as raising the age of consent to 19?

I think it should be more in line with the drinking age

no that is too high. 17 is the legal age limit to have sex in my state. I think 17 is good better than 18 but I would like to see 16 as the age.

No, I don't. Putting an age limit on a biological drive is kind of insane, in my opinion. Telling kids they can't have sex until they're 19? It doesn't work with cigarettes, alcohol or drugs, why would sex fit neatly into that slot?

The drinking age is completely arbitrary anyway, why would you want to connect the age of consent to it?

Some are ready for sex at early age - but most are better of waiting. But that's not a legal problem, that's up to individuals and families to decide.

Age of consent doesn't do anything but cause legal troubles for consenting people. If anything the age should be lowered. Keep your politics off my sex drive!

Why 19? Would a year make a difference? I think the age of consent is something people largely disregard, except when it comes to dealing with the law. It's all relative, some people are ready to have sex earlier than that, and some are not. If raising the age of consent is in hoping that people will mature a little bit more, I think that sex education, and not a 2 hour on abstinence like many "sex education classes" are will help more than increasing the age of consent. Horniness, inexperience, peer pressure, and curiosity may make especially young people do very stupid things. Proper sex education, I would like to think, will dull that stupidity.

Nope, not at all. It's 16 here and I think that's about right as in some ways it actually appeals more to teens before the age of consent as the illegal nature of the act is appealling too.

Once of the main reasons that the drinking age (as far as I'm aware from my Drugs & Behavior class) is 21 is that, with multiple studies, the brain is not completely developed under the age of 21 (it doesn't finish developing until around 25, but most of the developments 21-25 are minor). Ingesting drugs that alter the body's chemistry before the brain is developed can harm someone a LOT more than someone who is ingesting something AFTER their brain is fully developed.

As that's not really the same case with sexual activity, I see no reason for raising the age. If anything, I'm more in favor of making it 16 for most areas (if it isn't already that low in a state).

One hundred percent agreed. Raising the age limit wont stop anyone from having sex.
Why penalize people at a higher age for doing something totally natural? I would be against raising it to an age that's past the age most states consider people adults. Most states already have appropriate laws now, why change them?

It is 16 years old here in Canada and I think that's a good age. 19 is way too high.

No, I'm more in favor of lowering it. The age of consent didn't stop me from messing around before I was 18, I doubt it stopped anyone else either.

It depends on how you look at it, if it's an innocent person being accused of sleeping with a 17 year old when the accused is 19 it's pathetic. When there is almost a 30 year age difference and the person is underage, regardless of consent I think the person should be in jail if the young person is 17 or younger.

Depending on the views, the age should be lowered, stay the same, or heightened. Then again, I don't think it should be legal to have sex before 16 (and I had sex at 15, so I would get in trouble too).

The age of consent where I live is 16 unless the older party is in a position of authority over the younger one.

Age of consent is only useful in charging sex offenders.

15-year-olds sleeping with 15-year-olds - you're not going to stop that, and how could you ? They don't need to buy any special equipment to fuck - you're not going to get carded and turned away.

The idea that the law would PUNISH a child for having sex disgusts me. An adult should be punished for taking advantage of a child - but putting something on a 15-year-old's record for having sex ? Making it illegal to do something with their body that is completely natural and that needs no outside tools ? That's ridiculous.

While it can be troubling that some young people are having sex at an early age, making it criminal behaviour is not going to stop anything and isn't the answer. Better sex education and education in general is.

Absolutely not.

I work in young people's sexual health, and making sex illicit for them can be extremely damaging.

I think other countries should copy South Africa's model; their age of consent is 16, but those between 12 and 16 are allowed to experiment with others within that age gap.

As long as it's combined with a sex positive, body positive sex education then that should pose no problems, and allow young people to act on what their bodies tell them without driving them underground and putting them at high risk.

Underage children should also have access to abortion and emergency contraception without the need for a parent's consent.

I agree with what x203 saying. Within reason this is a personal choice, not to mention most don't even think about it currently. I would be strongly against raising the age of consent to 19.

Honestly I think the drinking age should be lowered to 18. As for age of consent, 18 seems to be the maximum for developed countries and it works pretty much as well as the year 16 age of consent countries.

I'd say keep it around 18 with the same exceptions for people within 2 years. Putting it older would just mean people would be breaking more laws.

I was 17, no regrets, and I was ready, and I think it's stupid to keep treating young people like they can't make their own decisions and know when THEY are ready to engage in THEIR OWN sexual behaviors.

As long as they are safe and enjoy it and are not being abused then I don't care.

In Germany the age of consent is 14 in certain cases. If you are a teacher or something like that, age of consent is 16 or 18, I don't know exactly as I have never been a teacher.

I think it's perfect as kids here in Europe get used to sex and sex ed very early. If I compare the numbers Germany has a very low teenager pregnancy rate.

Agreed, but the problem in most places with the age of consent isn't about young people having sex with each other (that's legal), it's older folk having sex with underage people.

With the cigs, drugs and alcohol I agree, none of those should have an age, it puts a taboo on it, then it's novelty. That's a problem, not the substances themselves!
