I have noticed a few listings for toys that the properties tab describes as being made from Jelly and phthalate free.... Is this even possible? Here's a link to one of them: link I guess they could be refering to the plastic pocket rocket itself but, I find it to be a bit confusing. This isn't the only one I have seen though. Here's another example: link So, what gives?

My harness came with a phthalates free dong made out of jelly. I did the legwork of emailing the company and they guaranteed me that the dong was made out of jelly and 100% phthalates free... so they are out there, they do exist.

Some manufacturers use word Jelly as a common name for the group of soft jelly like materials. In fact this kind of texture and softness can be achieved with various chemical compounds like TPR, silicone TPR, etc. Before phthalate awareness almost all manufacturers used phthalate softened PVC to make their Jelly now they use either other materials or other PVC softeners. The manufacturer of this particular toy uses term Jelly on the toy and indicates that it is phthalate free as well.

Wow! I really was under the assumption that ALL jelly material contained phthalates. It's really great to know that phthalate free versions are truly out there! Kudos to you sleeping dreamer for contacting the company! At least I wasn't alone in being skeptical! I did truly believe jelly=phthaltes. At least now I know better! Thanks! =)

I had noticed a couple toys that were Jelly and Phthalate free, and what Pale Ada says makes sense. Thank goodness that companies are starting to make safer toys. I don't know about everybody else, but when I purchased my first dildo, I would have passed up the Jelly one for a more expensive safer toy had I known about Phthalates. I really love the "Better Options" feature because of this. I think that if someone is looking for their first toy and they see that a toy has a safety rating of 2, they would be more inclined to either find out more about the material or else buy a toy that had a higher safety rating. As more and more people become conscious about this and purchase safer toys, the toy companies are going to have to start abandoning using Phthalates completely in order to compete. In the end, everyone wins.
08/04/2008
I agree with you Bulma. I too would have passed up the first dildo of jelly for a more expensive, safer toy had I known then what I know now. Phthalates just scare me so I try really hard to avoid them. I do think the toy companies are trying to get away from phthalates though or at least that's the opinion that I have come to believe. At least I hope they are...

Until I had researched the subject a bit I too thought that jelly=phthalates. There are other chemicals that can be used to soften PVC, and companies that are making an effort to be phthalate free will usually let the public know because otherwise, what are they spending the extra time and money for? That being said, I really don't know anything about the softening chemicals that are alternatives to phthalates, so although I hope they won't cause the same kinds of problems as phthalates, I really don't know that any one has studied it to this point. For this reason, for most of my toys, I'll try to stick to materials I know I can trust (like silicone).
08/06/2008
With all the the hype over phthalates is it really that big of a concern? Everyone wants to avoid harmful chemicals. It's just impossible. Plastics are every where from the food containers we eat out of to the bottles our medicine comes in. There really isn't anyway to avoid it. They are always going to leach into your skin. In this day and age everything is cancer causing. I guess what I am saying is, if you use a jelly toy a few times a week, can it really be that harmful compared to other thing we come into contact with?

I'm sorry, I just have to bring up this post again. I have been doing some research and I found a very informative website link. I'm still so confused. I understand that jelly/jel-lee can't be sterilized the same way that silicone can. Me and my husband don't keep condoms in the house, we never have and never will. They are just annoying to me and you can't feel through them. I can't imagine buying a toy then having to put a condom over it, that just seems so ridiculous. I could understand it if you were sharing it with another person, whom you wouldn't trust having sex with without a condom. I am the only one using my toys. I clean them before and after use and store them between uses, I take very good care of my toys. So if the fact that you need to use a condom with jelly toys is strictly hygienic then I should be fine, right?
If the use of a condom on jelly toys it because of health risks associated with phthalates then I see it as more of the artificial sweetener phenomenon. Yeah, it’s harmful-in lab rats, who receive an excessively abnormal amount on a daily basis. I guess that I am still not convinced there are dooming health risks especially if you think about all the things that our bodies come into contact with everyday. Like I said all plastics/rubbers contain potentially harmful chemicals. So if your going to try to avoid phthalates all together, then you should also avoid that number 3 plastic water bottle sitting on your desk that is leaching BPA into your skin. I’m also pretty sure that a polystyrene plate is just as harmful. I mean it’s not biodegradable and still people love them for back yard BBQs.
I would really love to know what Cock Wrangler has to say about this one. You seem to be on the up and up with safety issues. I would really love it if someone could help me understand what the consequence is here.
Another thing that worries me is that whenever I read reviews there are always comments posted such as “Nice review, but the product is jelly. That sucks.” ( Which I have made comments similar myself.) It makes me wonder if reviews of jelly toys don’t get the same appreciation as silicone. The only thing that I really see different is that jelly does kind of smell bad and the texture might not be the same quality as silicone, oh and you also can’t share it with the man down the street. I’m not trying to be a smart ass here, I’m just curious because I own several jelly toys and think they’re great!

I do agree with you somewhat on the dangers of Jelly vs. the dangers of every day products. Our water bottles are dangerous, our pans are dangerous, breathing is dangerous. I try to avoid Jelly, but for example, I have a Jelly cock ring that I make no attempt to cover. There's some research but not enough to have me run screaming yet.

Well, Amanda Holloway (sp?) has written a nice editorial on this subject here on EdenFantasys which can be found here: link

So, it's personal preference. If I choose not to cover my jelly that doesn't mean I'm going to end up with cancer. I guess that there are worse things. Think about cigarettes they cause cancer period. Everyone knows this and yet they still fly off the shelf!
09/05/2008
I would say it is personal preference as well. You don't have to do anything you don't want to. Nobody does but, I mostly post comments about jelly containing phthalates because alot of new toy user's are unaware of them. I really think everyone has the right to know what is in things they are putting where the sun doesn't shine. Then you have the informed decision to use a condom or not. I realize there is no way to completely get away from these chemicals because they are in everyday products but, I am concerned that placing items in the vagina or anus might be a bit more risky because they would be so easily absorbed. It's also something to think a little more about if you are pregnant. I personally try to avoid buying new toys that are jelly but, I still use the toys I already have that are jelly. It's just my opinion on it anyway. You can minimize the leaked phthalates by washing a toy before you use it too. The truth is, no one knows what phthalates may or may not do. I do use condoms on jelly dildos I own now but, there's no way to cover a cock ring so I don't.

Jelly is definitely the least safe option for sex toys, but on the other hand that's on a scale of items that are being used for sex toys already, not on a scale of 'every material in the world."
Though, I'm concerned about most plastics, and do make attempts to avoid them when possible (metal water bottle here). As far as I'm concerned, anything that has a lingering smell (like jelly/PVC toys), leaves a taste on something (like plastic bottles tainting water), etc. is not something I want to come into contact with my body.
As far as jelly sex toys, I would say that it is a personal preference, to some degree. When it's about personal use toys, hey, it's your body. I'm not going to stick a jelly toy anywhere near any of my orifices, but if you want to, so be it. However, when it comes to sharing toys (either between people or vaginally/anally), I do adamantly suggest covering every time. That's not just an issue of questionable plastics, it's an issue of bacteria and STI transmission- responsible safer sex, basically.

Your link didn't work- I'm curious about that article. The editorial that Jimbo mentioned on this site is a good one, too. I guess I didn't get all my thoughts out in that one post.

That other issue of jelly/phthalates triggering yeast or bacterial infections/vaginal irritation in some people also seems like a really good reason (to me) to be wary of these materials. Anything that CAN have that effect on a good number of people seems like not the healthiest thing to be sticking anywhere.

I don't drink out of plastic water bottles because I hate the taste. I always use glass if at all possible. I'm sorry that the link didn't work. I don't know how informative this website really is. If it's something that is still being tested then this could be a one-sided website.
I would like to also thank everyone for there input.
