I was reading reviews and they seem to be at both ends of the spectrum. I love the price and simplicity of these, but are they painful?

I think it's mostly going to depend on your pain tolerance. Metal cuffs have the potential to be very painful, and some people enjoy that while others prefer something that hurts less.

Any handcuffs will cause pain if they are squeezed to tight.

I'm not a fan of the metal kind because to me they feel uncomfortable but other people really like them so I guess it depends on the person. I don't even like hard bangle-style bracelets so I'm not surprised I don't like them.

I tend to think cuffs without padding are for folks who enjoy a little pain.

It depends on how you use them. If you are going to be struggling a lot or have them on for a long time, it's more than just the pain (and yeah, metal cuffs DO hurt more than neoprene etc) Nerves and blood flow can be cut off if you aren't careful with metal, and a little fluffy cover on metal cuffs might not help all that much.
I much prefer either leather or neoprene cuffs, as they hold more securely, rarely leave marks and if used properly, should not cut off circulation or nerve flow.
If ANY form of bondage results in tingling or numbness, it's time to call Safe Word before permanent damage is done. Pain is one thing, permanent damage is an entirely different story.
Well made leather, neoprene or leather substitute cuffs can be used without pressure points occurring, which is really the best idea. IMO, metal cuffs are mostly for show, videos and photo shoots, not real long term B&D situations.

They're not painful with regular wear and play. However, once my boyfriend at the time thought it okay to push me on the bed face first in these and the metal bruised my wrists. Ouch!

Metal cuffs are just fine as long as you are not putting them on too tight, or struggling/jerking around in them. But if you are really into any sort of restraints I would highly recommend getting a nice pair of leather cuffs instead. Much more comfortable/flexible.

Some people enjoy pain :3 Maybe try some softer handcuffs or bondage tape/rope? That would be better.

You might want to try the fuzzy handcuffs to avoid pain.

Im with everyone else I think it depends on who is suing them and how much pain u like. As well how tight they are put on.
