For a first ring, ALWAYS go with the softer materials. The harder materials are much harder to use for a first time.

Start with silicone then try a metal one. After getting the hang of it I prefer metal - but it must have a circular profile like the Omega link - the flat ones dig into my pubic bone when my wife is on top - which we do a lot.
