Need advice with SinFive Emigi

Contributor: Kindred Kindred
My wife gave birth to our second child about 6 months ago. Both were vaginal births. To improve her muscle tone, my wife asked that I get her an exerciser to help. So, after much research, I bought her the SinFive Emigi link.

Her experience so far:
When she first put it in, it slipped out before she got to the bathroom door. After a few more attempts, she was able to insert it and have it stay put. Now she is able to keep it in for about an hour before it slips out. She says it is very comfortable while it is in and she doesn't notice it until it starts to slip.

Our questions:
1. Is this normal? Should she be having this much trouble keeping it in? Does she just need to keep at it? I chose the Emigi because it was small and light weight and I thought it would be a good choice for a first exerciser.

2. Is she supposed to be actively contracting her muscles the whole time the Emigi is in? I guess I thought it was more of an insert and forget about it for the most part, that it was more of a passive exercise.

3. Do you think her difficulty in keeping it in is because her muscles are very weak and/or she is stretched out from the pregnancies? Would a larger exerciser such as the Smartballs or the Teneo Duo be easier for her to hold in even though they are heavier? What about the Teneo Uno?

I have some understanding of Kegel exercises, but zero when it comes to using products such as this. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi, Kindred!

I'm no medical expert, but I have the Emigi and just wrote a review on it. I, too, had very little knowledge about working out kegels, so I did a lot of research going into the writing process.

1. I think the slippage could be normal for someone who has some stretching due to childbirth. I'd recommend that she keep at in and in addition do other kegel exercises. Have her lie on her back, knees up, and contract her PC muscle (the muscle that you flex to hold your pee) for 5 second intervals. If she does this regularly, she should regain some strength in her PCs, enough to be able to hold the Emigi in. You may also want to look into other kegel exercises that are not kegel balls (i.e.- Juno). I can understand not wanting to spend more money on kegel exercisers since you've already bought the Emigi. My advice is to try the kegel contractions.

2. The Emigi is a passive exercise. The balls jiggle as you move, causing the PC muscles to contract and hold the toy in. Since she is a bit stretched out, the Emigi is simply falling through a space which isn't yet tight enough. If she keeps up with kegel exercises and gives herself more time to heal, eventually she will be able to hold it in.

3. Yes, I think it's because she's stretched out. But I do not think that buying bigger kegel balls is the answer. I think this will be even harder for her to keep in since they are heavier. Bigger isn't always better! Have her try the floor exercises I suggested above.

Hope that helps!

I definitely agree that she should just keep at it. Keeping the Emigi in for an hour at a time is definitely benefiting her. She will see improvement with time and be able to hold it in even longer.

I have heard that smaller Kegel exercisers are actually more difficult for the vaginal muscles to grip and hold. For example, marble-sized Ben Wa balls (like these, for example: link) are considered to be some of the more advanced Kegel exercisers. They are much harder for the vaginal muscles to hold in place because, being smaller, the vaginal muscles must contract that much stronger to grip them and to keep them from falling out. I suspect this is the case with the Emigi, as it is considerably smaller than LELO Luna Beads, Smart Balls, or K-balls.

That being said, however, Kegel exercisers that are weighted (such as those made from heavier metal or from stone) are more challenging to hold in. But Smart Balls, Kegel Balls, Luna Beads, and the Emigi are not exactly in that type of heavier weight category. So, again, I think the smaller size makes the Emigi easier to slip out than those other (larger) exercisers I just named.

I don't think this necessitates you making another purchase, however. Just keep encouraging her to use her Emigi daily and you should see noticeable results in a couple of weeks.

Oh, and congratulations to you, your wife, and your first child on the newest addition to your family!

If you do decide to try another kegel exerciser, I would suggest something like the kegelcisor link or the energie link -- barbell type. They are, in my experience, an excellent first step to working up to ball type and much, much more effective.

I also have a few questions so I figured I'd just post them here.

I just purchased this after reading all the fantastic reviews. This is my first kegel exerciser and frankly I never really did kegels to begin with. But after my mom had surgery for a prolapsed uterus, I decided it was time to start exercising! That and I don't feel as full when I have sex with my boyfriend. Which is odd considering I've never had children and I'm in my early 20's.

1. I was just wondering, how long and often should I wear these?
2. Approximately when will I start seeing an improvement in tone?
3. Do kegel exercises actually make you tighter or do they just improve your ability to contract the muscles?

Thanks!!!
