I'm really interested in getting these but a little wary of the fact that there is no retrieval cord (even though I know they can't get "lost"), but my question is, how far in do you insert the exercisers so that they are in the right place?
Or is there even a right place or depth at all?

Every woman is a different depth so the proper depth is where they are comfortable and not falling out.
As far as a retrieval string, a retrieval method is only necessary for anal objects. Unless your cervix is open (in which case you shouldn't have anything inside you), there is no play for vaginal toys to go. No matter how far back they feel like they are, if you bear down, you can pop them out. It may take some work but that's kind of the point of working your kegels. You are strengthening the pelvic floor muscles.
If you are unfamiliar with what those are and what bearing down is like. Think about the muscles you use to stop your pee mid-stream or to keep from peeing. Bearing down is a lot like letting go to pee but more pronounced, like pushing pee out quickly.
