Color: Abalone!?? Is EF selling seafood now?

Contributor: namelesschaos namelesschaos
I found something a little strange today, I was writing up a review of this product:link and under color it has this listed.

Color:
Abalone / Black

Me: "wtf is abalone?"

Typing it in to a search engine only yields result for a type of sea snail link that does not match the color of my new piece of bondage gear. Now the only colors on the toy are black and sliver so I'm assuming that abalone=sliver, but still a weird word choice.

So, I guess what I'm asking is:
1)What the hell color is abalone supposed to be, is it even a color or have shell finish invaded the product pages?

2)Anyone one else find weird color descriptions they can't understanding while reviewing?

I have seen this description on jewelry, car paint etc. It might be color-sensitive when reflecting. It might have just been a description oversight on the manufacturer's part.

Really though, this is a question for the Product Manager - and you could have emailed him. Or you could have asked Spartacus, through EdenLink. Albeit, in a less sensationalizing and more respectful way.

I was shooting for humor not sensationalizing and disrespectful. I apologize for my failed attempt at humor

Although ,not to be argumentative, but I intentionally didn't use Eden link, as it would defeat the point, and your post illustrates why I didn't ask Spartacus. I'm not asking about a product I'm asking what the consensus definition ,if any, of a physical propriety given in the description of a product is. As I'm reviewing the product I have to see how accurate their description is, if a manufacturer is not using the word Abalone accurately I would have no way of knowing that.

When you say you've seen this description on "jewelry, car paint etc" that suggests there is a general consensus on what the word means and I want to no what that (the consensus definition) is so I compare it to what if any definition Spartacus or any other manufacturer uses. What I'm asking is a third-party point of reference, not just for use with this review but for any review, hence why I asked the third parties directly.

I could be wrong, but I believe it refers to that pinkish/silverish shimmery coloring on the inside of sea shells. I think there's some word evolution at play there, hence your confusion. If you use a dictionary, all you're going to find is sea life, but if you were to search the term on, say, etsy.com, you'd see jewelry with that color range and shimmery property to it.

Yes.

abalone: a large mollusk of the genus Haliotis, having a bowllike shell bearing a row of respiratory holes, the flesh of which is used for food and the shell for ornament and as a source of mother-of-pearl

Abalone shell after polishing

Beautiful, no? It refers to the mother-of-pearl, opal-ish color.

(Also, I love Etsy)

Wow that's a bright color! I've never known what it was as a color reference either, I always assumed a shiny pink for some reason. I wasn't incredibly far off though. I love the inside of shells, such a pretty shimmer!
