Looking at the safest of materials, let's try and come up with a comparison of which one may be the safest and still be useful for a variety of sex toys. The material has to be at least an 8 on the EdenFantasys safety range, so starting at the bottom of the range we have Plastic, WTP, Metal, Acrylic, Ceramic, Wood, Glass, and Pure Silicone. I will try and pull a similar product from each category for comparison. I may not have much experience with several of them, but I will add my two cents and hope that others that have more experience with some of these materials will do the same. Since I tend to like insertable toys with some curve, I will try to select ones designed for g-spot or prostate stimulation where possible. I will select toys with 1"-1.5" diameter as well.

Not necessarily just looking at the items being considered here, which material is the safest to you? In the comments you can explain your reasoning if you would like.
Metal is the only one of these with a range of safety (8-10) do you think that is accurate or if you only consider stainless steel, would it be a 10? How can Glass and pure silicone be compared when they both rate 10?

Any non-porous material is going to be very safe, so it's really a tossup. Silicone can be torn (if it's roughly handled, etc.) but otherwise I would say most of these materials are all good bets as far as safety is concerned.
05/01/2009
For some reason, glass and stainless always seem the most safe to me. It's in my head, I know, and probably goes back to all my years working in hospitals and my youth spent boiling glass baby bottles but there ya have it. If it's in my head it's pretty much my reality and I tend to make choices based on it.
05/01/2009
Haha. I like this poll. I went with glass. Because it's transparent so I can see inside it, and it never seems to really get very dirty in the first place. Totally in my head. I do love boiling silicone though.
05/02/2009
It really seems like glass is the safety race. I guess that makes sense since it is so easy to clean.
05/03/2009

I voted for glass. I thought for a while, trying to decide between glass and silicone, but I eventually decided that glass is safe with any lube so there are fewer chances for screwups there.
05/03/2009
I went with silicone. All of these toys are pretty easy to clean (of the options I would have a question about wood, though, as the material is porous so you're dealing with a finish of some sort), but excluding silicone they're also stiff. In the hands of someone who wasn't careful they could cause bruising or possibly poke through something, or what happens if you fall or roll off the bed? The risks are low (who's going to let someone use a sex toy on them if they don't know and trust the person), but they are there, and in this vote everything else is so close.
05/03/2009
This was a tough one, but I went with glass. I love glass, silicone, and steel all for their awesome non porous properties. I've heard many conflicting things about wood, in the sense that sellers on places like Etsy will only finish their dildos with FDA approved salad bowl oil and at least you know what you're getting that way, but I have friends that are dead set against Nobessence because they won't disclose what's in Lubrosity and only that it's USP standards met. Some people like to know EXACTLY what's in something. :p As far as I know in terms of porosity of wood, it cannot be shared due to it being so porous.
05/03/2009
Metal, all the way. Glass makes me nervous about chipping, and silicone can run into troubles with silicone lube.
05/04/2009
I'd say metal. Glass could ultimately crack or break and as Red says, silicone lube isn't always compatible with silicone products. Medical grade stainless steel just feels safer to me.
05/09/2009
I would think glass toys would be the safest in terms of cleanliness and chemicals, but I'm scared to use them so always migrate toward the medical-grade silicone.

You're scared because of the possibility of physical damage, I suspect, which is an aspect of safety. Silicone toys don't have this risk, and if it's the 100% medical silicone there really isn't any chemical risk either.

Glass is both my favourite material but also the one I feel is safest. It is so easy to clean and fully sterilisable, no chemicals added etc
11/16/2010
Glass seem like the safest to me.
11/17/2010
Love glass! So easy to clean and I totally trust it!
11/20/2010
Glass is pretty safe. Not porous and very easy to clean
12/27/2010
I voted glass because it's not porous and easy to clean and overall trustworthy. Stainless steel and silicone are all up there as well.
12/28/2010
I think that medical grade steel is the safest, because a silicone toy can get torn, and with glass I always think about breaking it or possible hidden cracks... Maybe just in my head but... If I would make a "top 3": 1. Metal , 2. Silicone, 3. Glass.
01/22/2011
I voted for silicone. I am probably biased since I don't own any glass toys (and love my silicone ones), but even so, I have this paranoia that I would end up breaking something that is made of glass. Yes, I realize that the Pyrex glass that sex toys are made of is designed to not break easily...but even so.
01/25/2011
I loooove silicone and glass, but I rate silicone higher just because glass can shatter/fracture. But glass is sooooo nice!

For overall safety I chose silicone. Glass is completely non-porous, as is silicone, but silicone doesn't chip, crack or break easily. Even a small chip or hairline break could spell disaster, and My Man doesn't let me have glass toys for that reason.
Honestly, I do think glass is safe, but he's looking out for me the best he can.
Metal is pretty safe IF it's pure stainless steel. Things with nickel in them are not as safe as some people are allergic. I am always a little wary of aluminum because of the Alzheimer's studies which showed increased aluminum in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. I really DOUBT that aluminum toys will cause a problem, but it still is sitting at the back of my mind. I don't even use aluminum cookware.

All these are highly rated for safety, but if I had to pick from the exact same shaped toy in all these materials, I would go for the glass every time.
08/18/2011
I could have voted glass or steel on the pretense that I know they are both very safe. I voted silicone though because it is usually not too firm and has some flexibility to it so it runs less of a risk of causing an "owwie" while being used. It's my personal toy preference.
08/18/2011
Glass is the safest but silicone is a close second
08/18/2011
glass is definitely the best but silicone is awesome because it's not so darn rigid.
08/20/2011
Glass seems very sterile but I have to say silicone seems better to me because it's more pliable and so safer for more... enthusiastic people.

Problem with glass...it is still GLASS. I HAVE had a glass toy break. Thankfully NOT while in me, but when fell from my nightstand. I have great respect for potential fragility of glass and THAT does detract a bit from SAFETY. My steel toys could get shot from a cannon and not get a dent!!!!

Chemically yes, but I just cannot play HARD with anything glass, since seeing one of mine split on falling...and having an edge like a knife after it did. Sure, that was a fall to a hardwood floor...but hey, it is still GLASS.

Glass!
09/23/2011
Glass, 100% silicone, and stainless steel are all very safe materials, and are all actually used for cooking. All can be easily sterilized. I think stainless steel is probably the least likely to be damaged if dropped, although it might damage something else. Silicone and glass require more care - silicone can't be used with most silicone lubes, and glass could potentially become dangerous if it' is dropped and it cracks or chips. I would consider all of these to be about equally safe, as long as they are cared for and used appropriately.
09/24/2011
I have toys made of silicone, of glass, and of stainless steel, and I know that they're all equally very safe. But still, I feeeel 'safest' with the stainless steel toy. Something about it being so shiny. And you know, medical equipment is made of stainless steel so...

I think pure silicone is safest, but I'm not an expert at materials science.
01/21/2012
looking at being able to sanitize it and chem properties so I'd go metal, glass then silicon. how ever some people will have negative medical reaction depending on the material. *shrugs* go to a vagina doc and ask.

Pure silicone, glass, and stainless steel are all non-porous and sterilizable. Silicone pulls ahead *slightly* imo because you don't need to worry about tiny chips or scratches like you do with hard materials.
01/21/2012
Pure silicone, glass, and metal/stainless steel are all the safest materials you can buy. Non-porous, steralizable, safe great materials. Each has their own advantages though. It depends on the persons preference between those three materials from there on out because it doesnt get safer than this!
And as Greenleaf stated silicone may be the better choice because it wont chip or get scratches. Like glass and metal can.

Glass and silicone
04/18/2012
Glass, steel, and silicone are all excellent materials. In my mind, the only thing that sets silicone above the others is that glass and metal are easier to scratch or chip when dropped. This creates a possible home for bacteria to thrive. I can drop my A bomb on a hardwood floor with little worry. If I ever dropped my pure wand or sasha plugs, then I'd be feeling and looking for scratches and such.
