PVC Harnesses - are they safe?

Contributor: bog bog
I would never get an insertable toy made of PVC. I like silicone. What do you use to hold your body-safe dildo? A leather harness? A PVC harness? Is a PVC harness safe to use?

On one hand, they are worn outside the body. On the other hand, the skin is porous.

A vinyl harness is probably OK for most sex wear. It doesn't breathe, so you probably wouldn't want to have it on for a whole day, but for a couple of hours it should be fine.

The skin is porous, but it is a much better barrier than a mucous membrane is.

The thing to consider is any potential allergies you may have. I know someone who had a bad allergic reaction to PVC in direct contact with her skin. She had gotten a PVC harness and ended up with a severe rash everywhere it touch her. This is something that you can only find out by testing it though, be it a patch test (allergy tests do this) or by just trying it and seeing what happens. Unless you are one of those who is picky about all your toys being phthalates free, you should be fine. While yes the skin is porous, you will have sweat and oils coming out of the pores during harness use which will assist in preventing anything form getting in.

I personally will only buy leather ones, but that is because I am a fan of leather. The life span of leather is much longer than most PVC when properly cared for and as far as I am concerned feel much better against my skin.

PVC Isn't harmful for most of the skin it's only in areas where the skin is likely to absorb chemicals quickly that it's potentially harmful. The real harm in PVC insertable toys is the fact that they can't be cleaned thoroughly after play. A PVC harness would be perfectly fine...might have a chemical smell but it won't hurt you. It's not like you are going to wear them all day long and the skin it touches is not going to absorb enough of the chemicals to make you sick. If you have a latex allergy, though, you might want to consider a better quality harness as PVC can excite latex allergy symptoms in sensitive people.
