I recently bought a new toy that is "body safe" silicone. However, it smells unlike any silicone I've ever smelled. Does "body safe" have any real meaning purity- or quality-wise? It smells like it's offgassing some plasticy chemical. The smell is pretty strong. I've tried airing it out for several days and have washed it multiple times. It's not boilable, but I could try bleach. Is it just releasing the odor of the packaging or should I be concerned about the quality of the material?

My silicone toys haven't smelled bad. In fact, they hardly smell at all and the scent they do have isn't unpleasant. What toy did you get, by the way? That might help. Some companies lie about what their toys are actually made of or at least mislead customers.

I have never had any silicone smell. That is odd. I seriously doubt it is actually silicone personally.

You could consider doing a flame test, but as P'Gell points out, it may be dangerous: link

I've never had any smells on my new silicone toys. But, my Tantus Echo does have a problem with picking up scent from its surroundings; I used to store it in my nightstand, and it smells like cedar ever since.

I've never had a silicone toy smell at all really. Surprised that washing it did nothing really. Bleach shouldn't be a problem if it is pure silicone, looks to me like the inner parts might be plastic, but that shouldn't be really smelly either. Seems kind of strange to me.

I've got it soaking in a solution of baking soda and hot water. If that and a couple more days of airing don't help, I think I'll exchange it. None of the reviews mentioned a smell (at least one said no smell), so maybe I got a lemon?

Hmm. I'm not sure, then. Their website lists it as silicone, as well. I wonder what the problem is.

Yeah, that strikes me as really strange! You could look for an Opus forum or Opus rep here and message them, to see what they say. I've never had a silicone toy smell odd either, and that toy is well reviewed... so maybe you did get a stinker.
Hope it works out one way or the other!
