How small can glass toys get while still being safe?

Contributor: Bash323 Bash323
Hi all. I’m curious about glass toys but I have a few concerns about them. Mainly how small they can get and still be safe to use. I’m very tiny and afraid of pain so would need something that is small (under an inch in circumference).

Also, I drop things often and have a fear of a glass toy breaking while I’m using it. Does anyone know how to figure out these concerns in a safe way? Or does what I need or want not exist?

One last thing: can vibration be used with glass? Are there glass vibrators? I would guess not but this is new for me.

Thank you for all your help!

Hey there, I’m Leila, one of the admins here, happy to help!

I saw in some other threads that you mentioned being AFAB FTM — that’s awesome that you’re sharing your journey. To recommend the best toy for you, I was wondering: are you looking for something for anal use, vaginal use, or maybe a combo option?

Glass toys are a solid choice (pun intended!), super durable, and safe — no need to worry about them breaking easily. Plus, there are ways to pair them with vibrations if that’s something you’re interested in.

If you’d prefer, we can chat more privately to figure out the best fit for you. Or feel free to share here — your experience could definitely help others too!

Hi Leila! It’s strange for me because I’m asexual mostly in that I hate the idea of partnered sex and penetration, but I was looking for something for vaginal use only. I keep trying silicone toys and a lot of them don’t work for me, even if they’re on the smaller side.

So far, wands are the toys that work best for me because I have a fear of pain or possibly hurting myself, but every once in a while I get the urge to try something new.

Thank you so much.

Hey Bash!

Just wanted to jump in to offer some help! You might be on the right track looking at glass toys as an option if silicone ones haven't been working for you. While some silicone toys can be squishier, the silicone is naturally a little 'grippier' compared to glass which is smoother and will slide easier.

Lubricant will still help with glass toys (as with using silicone toy), although some people are able to use glass toys sometimes without lubricant since the glass slides easier. Another benefit to glass toy is you can use silicone lubricant with it if you wanted to, which should make it even more 'slippery' (compared to water based lubricant, which is only type you should use with silicone toy).

For insertable glass toys, the smallest (thinnest) I see here is the Crystal G which is 1 inch diameter. A couple options I saw that are slightly thicker at 1.25 inch diameter are the Love Journey or Pink Heart. I think glass is harder to make as small of toys as is possible with silicone, but these are all borosilicate glass which is one of the stronger types of glass! It's very durable and safe to use as the toy you don't have to worry about that! (not indestructible as it is possible to break if dropped from high enough on a hard floor/surface, but that's pretty much it)

Hopefully that helps!

I’ve tried metal in the past with no success because of size. I have cerebral palsy and it makes my muscles tight so I’m afraid of pain or potentially hurting myself. From what I’ve figured out, I would need something below an inch in width, but my search hasn’t brought up many dildos that small. Clitoral pinpoint vibrators are small enough, but not strong enough for me, probably because that’s not what they’re made for.

That is a tough size of insertable toy to find, except for repurposing toys such as clitoral pinpoint vibrators like you mentioned, I'm assuming something like this?

I don't think there will be any glass toys (or very few) out there below 1 inch diameter, and I would be a bit cautious to use any too thin as the glass can become fragile when it's thinner than that (especially for thin but longer piece of glass). Even though you want to use it vaginally, looking around at 'beginner anal toys' might find a few toys below 1 inch diameter that are metal or silicone. This silicone toy may be an option, not sure if the vibrations would be strong enough for you but it looks like the first bead or two are less than 1 inch (starting at 0.5 inch diameter maybe?).

Another option may be an unconventional use of toys called 'sounding rods', using them for penetration like a dildo, rather than their intended use. There are metal ones out there with stainless steel being the most body safe. You may actually end up wanting one of the 'thicker' sounding rods out there for your use, as they start very small in diameter so you should have some options. To add vibration to it, you could press a vibrating wand against the end of the rod that is sticking out, and the vibrations should travel through it, but I'm not sure how intense those traveling vibrations will be (may be worth a shot?) There are some that have built-in vibrations like this or some metal ones may be out there, but vibration may not be powerful enough.

I never thought of sounding rods! That might work. I’ll look into that. Thank you so much!
