Silicone has the highest 'slippery' effect - which makes it particularly effective for anal play/sex. Because there is no water to evaporate the lubricity lasts a very long time - again good for anal play.

The down side is that you cannot use silicone lube with silicone toys - and some consider them 'artificial'.

Bottom line - we use silicone for all play that does not involve silicone toys.

What do you prefer for your silicone toys? Water or oil based?

Because they tend to be more slippery, slick and mostly they're used for water play. Or because someone just likes the idea of using silicone based lubes better. Personally, I don't hardly use them because they tend to all be really thin, so that's useless for me, someone who needs a thicker lube like Liquid Silk or Maximus (which has a gel-like consistency.)

But silicone lubricants do hold up better in the water. For instance if you like to play in the tub, jacuzzi, shower, pool, etc. then a silicone lubricant won't just wash right away as easily. I just stick to water based because, like I said, silicones have never been thick enough to help me out & I really don't need the slipperyness since I don't play in water much. Also, a lot of my toys are silicone & in that area, I like to play on the extra safe side & just stick with water-based because I don't even want to take a chance on the materials not being compatible enough and doing any damage to the toys.

I have heard that silicone lubes are much longer lasting than water based lubes.

-So smooth it feels frictionless, for painless anal play
-Doesn't evaporate, so less need to reapply
-Can be used underwater, such as in the shower
-Is not absorbed into the body through the rectum, so it lasts for extended anal play. I don't understand when people prefer water-based lubes for anal play, because its "more natural." Which is more natural? Something you absorb (read the label, there are alot more ingredients in there than water!) into your body, basically eating it through your butt? Or some artificial silicone that doesn't enter your blood stream, because its NOT absorbed?

On the other hand, it is harder to clean up, because it is not water-soluble. I prefer water-based lubes for vaginal play, for "natural" reasons. You know water-based will be washed right out with natural lubrication, but because silicone isn't water soluble, it could hang out awhile. (Anally, its eventually pushed out.)

silicone. it doesn't make me feel all sticky and gummy like pretty much all water based lube does.. that's just not sexy! and you can use a drop or two and you're good to go. great for handjobs as well.. my wife and i don't do anal so i cant comment on that.

I just don't like silicone so far. I got some on the sheets - permanent stain. That was strike one. It smells icky - strike two. And I narrowly missed spilling it on one of our favorite Vixskin dildos. So...I gave up on silicone lube. Water-based Sliquid Organics Gel works great for us for everything we do.
