Slicone vs. waterbased

Contributor: Arlinnae Arlinnae 11/11/2012

I have only ever used waterbased lube - silicone I know can damage the toys. So... why is it still sought and bought? What does it do the water based lubes cant?

Silicone lube is much more slippery than water based. It seldom needs to be reapplied. Some prefer it for anal too.

LOL I should have added the bit about shower fun since that's why I bought it in the first place!

Silicone is really nice for anal sex and shower play, but its use is limited when it comes to toys, however. So it really depends on what type of play you're looking at using the lubricant for.

Agreed.

I usually use water based because I only have toys at the moment. With a real penis, I'd prefer silicone.

We use silicone ONLY for those times when I know no other toys will be used. For instance, if I know hubby is going to penetrate me anally while "spooning" and I have a SAFE toy up front...like a glass or steel toy, then we use silicone, because I know it will stay slick a long, long time. I like him to stay in me as long as possible after he cums, and often we fall asleep with his soft penis still in my tush. In a couple hours he may get hard again....still inside me, and we may both wake up for a nice round of "super late night" sex, and another sweet squirt of his cum in my rectum. Anything other then Silicone would just not work for this. The only other place we use silicone is in the bathroom, where we like to shower, wash each others bodies off real well (we have a huge shower, with multiple shower heads on each wall), and I may use lube on my finger to massage his prostate while sucking him hard (he loves when I do that in the shower, since my hair just rubs all over him and gives him amazing visuals looking down at me), plus if he has used his fingers to "clean my butt nicely" then he often lubes me up and begins some penetration of my tush with his penis and literally carries me to the sink to blow dry off (we have warming lights on the ceiling) and then to the bed, still impaled on his penis...which is a real hoot), and then I know I am going to get a great tush screwing. Fact is, nothing but silicone would work there either.

Wait...hubby just read my answer and adds that I forgot a biggie. Plugs for wearing out in public. I often wear a glass plug or metal plug out in public under tight jeans or a short skirt (no undies) to tease him (I do some private and strategic bend overs, or guide his hands around to feel the plug in me...which he knows he will be replacing with his lovely penis later on). I always, always, always use long lasting, thick silicone lube for that, and carry a bottle with me. If we are out for hours, I will often sneak into the ladies room, pop out the plug, and re-lube for comfort.

I have used silicone in the past...and I admit it was awesome. It was SO slippery and never needed to be reapplied. As in, if I didn't clean up before bed, I would wake up still slippery.

If it was compatible with my toys...chances are very high I would still be buying it.

I would use only silicone lubes if it was compatible with all my toys. The only reason I even use water based more often is because of this.

Silicone lasts so much longer!

I used one silicone lube hybrid, and afterwards it was impossible to clean. I felt slippery for ages. XD;; So I stick with water-based.

Silicone lube will only damage silicone toys, you can still put covers/condoms on silicone toys and use it safely, use non-silicone toys, or (what it's best used for) for anal sex. We bought some for sex in the shower!

It is longer-lasting and better for your body - neutral and non-irritating. Non-silicone toys are compatible with it, and I also use it with some of my better silicone toys.

I have a water/silicone hybrid, but prefer the pure silicone type. It's great lube, just not with silicone toys.

I use silicone based lubes for anal sex or anal play with glass, but when using my silicone toys I use a good water based one.

I'd be interested in trying a silicone based lube. I've only ever used water based lubes because of their ability to work with silicone toys and everything else. I just don't really think I need more than one lube, so I've never bothered to get a silicone one.

I recently tried silicone for the first time and didn't like it very much. I found it too oily and messy. It also seemed to produce a lot more friction than the water-based lubes I've tried, and you can't quickly reduce the friction with saliva, as you can with water-based lubes. Silicone is longer-lasting and does have a better safety profile than water-based, but those benefits don't outweigh the downsides for me. Can't hurt to try a small tube though.
