Pregnancy and lubrication

Contributor: Sensual husband Sensual husband
My wife and I in the near future are going to try to have a baby. She came to me last night with some lubrication called Pre-Seed they call themselves a fertiliy friendly lubrication. I might just be ignorant to this subject and I am sorry for this post if I am. Does your average water based lubrication some how stop your little swimmers from working correctly?

Yes, I do believe that Pre-Seed prevents sperm from being damaged if you are usually using any other lubricant. However, 'fertility-friendly' does not mean that it is going to improve your chances to conceive in case you have been struggling with getting pregnant. It means that you are not going to hinder the chances you already have when using other types of lubricants.

I'm not an expert and I cannot tell you exactly what ingredients could be harmful for sperm, but it's not difficult to guess that some ingredients and an inapropriate Ph balance could somewhat harm/degrade sperm. Most regular lubricants are only designed for... lubrication, and most people do not really care about the integrity of sperm when using them.

However, depending on the quantity of the lubricant used and the overall performance of the sperm to begin with, I am sure that a lot of people are able to get pregnant even if they are using regular lubricants. I believe that it is recommended for people who already know they need all the chances they can get.

Hope it helps, and good luck.

Wow, great answer! These are the things many people don't think about. What an interesting topic.

From what I know different chemicals in as well as viscosity of a lube can MILDLY effect the movement of sperm into the cervical os. (The opening of the womb.) Some chemicals (and I'm stumped on which ones right now) can effect mobility, even if there are no spermicides in the lube, so even if they MAKE IT to the cervical opening, they might not have the stamina once they get there to go all the way and penetrate the egg.

I need to stress, though, that this particular product is made by a company that makes some strange comments and you can tell from their terminology they may not be in favor of Choice. For instance, NO lube "harms embryos" like they claim, (ridiculous claim, really) and their website is FULL of testimonials, and not a LOT of real medical evidence. Lots of testimonials for a product may be anathema to actual evidence based medical research.(although they developers seem to work in the Bull Sperm Insemination Program a lot) They SAY the product is "conception friendly" (mostly based on animal studies, in vito studies (meaning "under glass" or in petri dishes) and from testimonials.)

That being said, I don't think it could hurt, but realize you MAY be supporting an anti-choice company by purchasing this product (although they don't say what they did with the products of conception in the in vitro studies, but I am thinking these studies on the sugars in this product were done by others, I could be wrong, though.) Your mileage and all that.

I'm sure you know other conception friendly ideas, like the Man wearing loose boxers, no hot baths, eating healthy, no alcohol, tobacco or weed for either of you etc.

However, many of us have gotten pregnant quite easily while using water based lubes, but if you want to hedge your bets, be as careful as possible. Remember, though that ANY lube can act as a slight barrier, I'm betting even Pre-Seed can SLIGHTLY effect movement of sperm, so if you don't NEED the lube, you may want to go freestyle (NO lube) during her fertile times and let those little swimmer swim unhindered all the way home!
