I don't think that I could ever get mad at someone who got me the wrong size in something, especially something as finnicky as lingerie. I mean, every manufacturer does things differently, so half the time I can't even tell what size I'm supposed to be until I try it on. Sizing is one of the least precise "standards" that I can think of, and I hope that everyone in my life who would ever have cause to buy me lingerie knows that I would feel that my intelligence were insulted if they thought that I would react like that. I feel like that comes off as very insulting to your wife, which I absolutely don't mean it to be - I'm just at a complete loss as to how a woman could expect a man to have not only a perfect understanding of how women's sizing works but also account for the slight variations between the fits of different fabrics and styles.

Well, she was just bummed, not mad at me. I think her reaction had more to do with the fact that she liked the piece, thought it was super sexy - but it was just too small for her. That provoked the almost-inevitable (and completely false) "I'm so fat" instant reaction so many women have in situations like that.
And I think the fact that it was a gift made it worse for her than if she'd bought it for herself, because she seemed apologetic about it, as if she'd let me down or something (again, nothing could have been further from the truth, but that's how she felt).
Overall, she's very supportive of my desire to buy her stuff!
