Boning on Corsets: What exactly does it do?

Contributor: Bethy Cassatt Bethy Cassatt
Is it just for support, or does it also help with keeping form or tucking in the tummy more? Or is it just to force you up straight?

All of the above. lol Good boning will help to form your figure but holding your body erect, holding in any extra 'body' you may have and and highlight your figure. Steel boning is best but not many have it, most are plastic which does not do as good of a job.

Yep, Tim's pretty much nailed it. The boning is supposed to hold you in, shape and support but plastic boning just isn't strong enough to achieve the results you want without bending and poking.

There are actually many corsets with steel boning, but they're not sold on sites like this one because they're either really expensive or just custom jobs. The corsets sold here on Eden are technically considered fashion corsets and will almost always have plastic boning.

There are a few corsets with metal boning, but like ToyTime said there aren't many. It is possible to replace the boning yourself, though, if you're up to the challenge!

I've been looking at changing out the boning in a couple of the ones i've gotten from here... they are beautifully made but the plastic boning bends and gives in places it shouldnt, you can buy metal boning in bulk on ebay and then just carefully change them out
