Body Types vs Lingerie

Contributor: Cherrylane Cherrylane 12/15/2011

Been trying on a lot lingerie lately and noticing how different things fit my particular body type and was wondering what styles of lingerie people feel most flatters their body type.

Just pick the poll most relavant to your shape and pick the style you usually find most flattering

Note, this isn't necessarily what you find most appealing or "ideally" prefer.

Hourglass figures are usually said to be those where the bust and hip measurements are of equal size or within an inch of each other and the waist is more than 9 inches smaller than the bust or hip measurement.

What styles of lingerie are most flattering to an hourglass figure?

I am hour glass, and plus size with large breasts and ass. Def corsets, anything with garters, and I really love low cut/empire waist chemises

A baby-doll I think makes your body look more flowy and smooth though corsets give you the BAMM!! Yeah I got curves and I can work them!!

You'd be surprised, but exaggerated hourglass shapes (like mine) mean that almost NOTHING fits, especially in the cup size section. I'm at 36 DDD >_<.

How I wish I was blessed with an hourglass. Oh well. I think a Corset looks amazing on those figures.

I wish I had at least DD's, I have wide hips and my tummy is sorta big, so if my tits were bigger, I think it would kinda help. lol

I've got a bit of an hourglass, not dramatic, but my bust and hips are about the same and on the curvy side of average, and my natural waist is noticeably smaller. And even though I'm like most women and don't love my body, I'm not far off from the body I want. I already have the shape "type", I love hourglasses. Just need to tone up here and there. But I think most styles look really sexy on an hourglass.

I'm an exaggerated, "soft" hourglass. Almost nothing fits correctly because It's hard to fit my bra size in mass produced lingerie. But I do like waist cinchers and cupless corsets, so I can wear a bra that fits.

im actually a hourglass figure, even tho i have a large belly on me, im 275 pounds (working on my diet) with my size breasts and hips, it's hard to find lingeri that fit me, so corsets are not in for me, but i think they are sexy on a hourglass figure, ill stick with the babydolls and teddies!

I've got an hourglass. Bra and panties look fine to me, as well as corsets. I like babydolls; I like how they look. However, I also prefer opaques, not see-through clothing. So, I feel babydolls do not work on me, because I just look like I'm swimming in fabric. I like my waist to be seen, but in a babydoll, it just isn't, and I don't feel attractive as a result.

At most, I think corsets are more flattering to the hourglass shapes. But personally, I prefer wearing babydolls or chemises because they are more comfortable and the fabric is usually more breathable.

So thanks for the info, I'm a banana I guess. My hips and breasts are the same size 32" and my waist is 27". My husband always comments that i have a hourglass figure, but I guess I need to do some ab exercises to make it smaller to truly be considered that. Going by what looks best on me

Teddies b/c my breasts are so small
garters/hose
babydolls

corsets with a generic sizing like small don't work for me b/c I'm to small chested. I have to get ones that's specifically designed for 32" bust.

Pear shaped figures are generally thought to be those where the hip measurements are larger than the bust and waist measurement. Unlike apple figures, which tend to carry weight in their upper body and abdomen, pear figures tend to carry more weight in their lower body.

Do you feel size changes the extent to which certain designs flatter a certain shape?

I'm thinking of a comprehensive meaning of "size." Smaller in clothing size, larger in clothing size, tall in height, "petite" height.

How much does it affect the decisions you make about the styles of lingerie you buy?

Absolutely! It's no different than buying a dress, suit, t-shirt, or even a pair of shoes. Each design has its pluses and minuses, and they have to be considered. The biggest factor of all, however, is what you feel flattered in. No matter how good the cut, if you don't feel sexy it doesn't matter.

Weirdly for me I don't know how to describe my body. I an a 2-4 but mostly carry my weight in my hips and bust. I find it hard to find clothing in general to fit me correctly but much more with lingerie. Lots of times the bras in a small are too small but the panties are too big. Confusing anf frustrating. I usually go for designs that have give to them and stretch. I do wish they made lingerie for hippy thin girls with huge boobs :-(

You are dead on! I'm a 0-2 with a c cup chest. I have wider his but no butt and its super hard to find panty sets that fit my breast and butt well. I hate having to pass up on sets because one or the other won't fit.

I'm extra-petite (4'11") but curvy. I don't care about the size in the tag as much as I care about getting the right fit. With regular clothing, I can take things to get altered. But lingerie is super hard to fit. First I have to fit big boobs and hips, but then the straps are always too long, the chest too low, the length too long. And unless I feel like I can alter it at home, I don't feel comfortable taking lingerie to my tailor...

My wife has a significant hourglass figure and it does make a different when buying lingerie. Corsets are the easiest to judge sizing for, but we hate gambling on one-size-fits-none lingerie. For stick thin or straight figures, they work great, but not for her.

Yes. So often, shirts and dresses are simply not long enough for me. With hemlines rising higher and higher each day, I've found quite a few dresses that I can only wear as tops because they simply don't cover me. It works for me, though, because these dresses' hems usually lay where I would like my shirts' hems to lay, but I can rarely find a shirt long enough for me. I found these tank tops at Target one day that were actually a length I was comfortable with, so I pretty much wear those exclusively. In Winter, I wear too-short-in-length, too-short-in-sleeves flannels on top. I even bought the biggest size available, still not long enough anywhere.
