I'm wondering if the type of wood is what makes it valuable. Does anyone know what kind of wood it's made of?

Hello Phoenix713, it is actually the function of the ToiBocks that makes it valuable.

ToiBocks is the only discreet storage designed specifically for novelties, that you can keep on the nightstand, dresser, or desk and it will not look out of place.

Due to variations in humidity and temperature throughout the world, and the small lock mechanism, ToiBocks is manufactured using MDF. We tried many different kinds of actual wood to create ToiBocks (over 3 years of R/D) and found the humidity/temperature of real wood made it constrict/contract and interfered with the effectiveness of the lock mechanism.

The design and function of the box are what increased the manufacturing costs, leading to the higher price.

All my best,
Dawn

What a great answer! I was wondering about that too, but wasn't quite sure. I got mine a few weeks ago, and it was totally worth it. My eyes are still drawn to it like crazy.

Hearing these stories are so interesting! I wish we had a place for manufacturers to put stories like this!

I sure am glad you got the price down from $600!

Thanks ~LaUr3n~ I've got so many stories about getting ToiBocks off the ground and most of them would make you gasp LOL. I think that once the product grows in popularity and we're able to (finally) get some of our other designs out (working capital is tough in this economy) that we'll be able to get the pricing down even lower for the original products. That said, it all takes time... and money... and awareness for the products

MDF stands for Multi-Density Fibreboard, I grew up knowing it as pressboard. It's wood chips that are compressed and laminated. If you've ever bought a book case or entertainment center at Walmart or another big box store like that odds are it's MDF. You can tell for sure because the edge typically will look like this on the back side and the bottom though some of the nicer products made out of MDF are finished so there are no raw edges.

MDF is pretty inexpensive and, unfortunately, is made with some pretty volatile chemicals that offgas for quite some time including formaldehyde. The cost is why products made out of it tend to be inexpensive ($20 bookcase anyone?) and, if it's important to you, don't let it get wet or stand in water (like a ring from your glass condensation on the night stand) because it can ruin the smooth lines of it and make the particles of wood swell, permanently changing its finish.

My dad has a little (and by little I mean HUGE) woodworking hobby and I spent a lot of time doing it with him since I was small.

Odd looking at your name because mine is Sangsara- Sang for short which is French for 'blood' like in your screen name (although Sangsara is Tibetan for reincarnation)
Anyway I say odd because my dads lively hood is (or was- he just passed away last night) woodworking and I too grew up with sawdust and" ooh come feel the grain of the wood" at midnight lol. He was an amazing person and left behind some beautiful projects- my favorite of which is a deluxe bed frame - perfect for bondage, though I'm sure he knew nothing of that while building it.
I wish I had've had the time to be taught how to make toy storage boxes before he died.
Thankyou to everyone on eden for being part of a place that despite its personal subject matter, has been extremely supportive of me during this, the saddest time of my life so far.
