It might depend on the company, but wooden toys are made of all kinds of wood - sometimes even bamboo! Often, the specific kind of wood that you get in the toy you order is random.

I would hope they dont use pine or cedar. very soft woods.
12/11/2011
No clue, but cherry is my favorite wood.
12/14/2011

My Fling is made from Padauk timber.

You forgot to include "other" and the nob essence toys alone are made of many kinds of un-listed exotic woods.

I'd like one made out of oak..

Applewood sounds neat.

It would be your best bet to email each individual company and ask them. Different companies use different types, and even toys from each company can differ.

They use many different woods, a number of which you do not mention.

Doesn't it depend on the toy? Ididn't think all toys were made of the same wood...

My guess is Pine.
Cheap.
Compared to other woods it is fast growing.
Naturally light wood for easy staining.
It is not incredibly heavy but is dense enough to withstand some heavy wear and tear.

Look up on Nob Essence!
07/13/2012
I would tend to believe the manufacturer in the case of high quality toys. If it's some no-name with no label, I would suspect pine, which seems an unfortunate choice, but it's cheap, and in other products unlabeled wood is very often pine.

Wood is beautiful! I'm sure it's different with each manufacturer.
