Is it a good idea to buy a gift set, and gift each item separately to different people? Or would it be better to get everyone something a little different?

I do both and make my own gift sets for each person. That way they are customized per person and the inappropriate items are kept for me.

I really don't like that type of gift because some people are sensitive to certain scents and some don't like certain scents and then you end up with a cupboard of stuff to re gift!

It could be. I do this as a secondary gift like a stocking stuffer.
