Water based is easier to clean up but re-application may be needed. Oil and silicone based lubes will last longer but are harder to clean off and may not be as thick.

I go between both. I would stay away from Probe (tried it once and it's like sticky snot). I recommend Ride H2O if you want a water based lube (easy to clean off sheets).

I'm not a fan of oil based lubes in general, I just don't like the feel. But silicone lubes are better for anal because they are slicker and last longer. The issue comes with compatibility with toys, specifically silicone. The majority of anal toys are silicone, which cannot be used with silicone lube, so you must use water-based lubes.

I like Coconut Oil. Its cheap, slick and good for you booty.
"Coconut oil is an organic, plant-based lubricant that is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. Use this lubricant liberally because organic, unrefined coconut oil is a healing and energizing food for the colon. Unrefined organic coconut oil contains lauric acid and other medium-chain fatty acids. These super fatty acids are quickly metabolized and converted into energy in the body." Anal Oil
There is a brand available in a blue squeeze bottle that works great.
Remember, Be Kind to Your Behind.

we enjoy water based for just about everything.

Probe is stringy, but it's also one of the few water-based lubes that I don't react to. A burning butt during anal play is no fun. It's also fairly cheap, a nice plus.
I tried coconut oil and moved away from it. It melts and becomes too fluid for comfortable anal use in my opinion. If you want to do a homebrew lube melt some coconut oil and mix it with Crisco, then it's thick enough to stay around.
Oil lubes are nice because they tend to stick to silicone well, but cleanup is hard. Water lubes work pretty well and cleanup is easier. I use a thick oil-based lube for big toys and usually water-based lube for everything else. I've found that silicone lubes sometimes do strange things with silicone toys. Usually non-permanent (provided you have good silicone lube and good silicone toys), but it seems that the lubricating power is often reduced, and sometimes my toys develop temporary "welts" or "hives".
The best way to do it is to get as many sample packs as you can and try them out yourself. Pick one you like and stay with it.

Clean up is key. Water based.

We only use water based for anal, Maximus. I have used an oil type and also a silicone lube but water based works just fine. My bf usually uses a condom for anal so obviously can't use an oil lube anyway.
The residue of oil or silicone in my butt is uncomfortable for me afterwards.

Hmm! Sounds Good. Maybe I'll fry up some fritters while I'm at it.
But seriously your right about it melting. I kind of count on it because I like to inject it into the rectum and then use a cream based oil lube on the toy itself. While I use Him Lube presently; Boy Butter looks promising. It has a coconut oil base and says it's safe for silicone toys.

I use Boy Butter pretty religiously. Boy Butter, Xantham gum, J-Lube, and coconut oil are my favorites.

Anal play with toys is usually accompanied by thick water based lube like Maximus. I enjoy silicone based lube for actual anal sex, particularly if it is happening in the shower.
10/22/2011
My all time favorite is Slick Stik but it's hard to find. I wish EF would carry it. I've suggest it before but it never gets picked up
10/22/2011
I usually use copious amounts of water based lube. It's easy to clean up and doesn't interact with silicone, which is what most of my toys are made of.

I must not be "Normal", We hardly ever use lube. I prefer spit.

that works too. Except it grosses out my wife, thus we use water based lube.

We use Pjur Back Door - very effective if your not using silicone toys.

I like syngery you can not use silicone toys

I always always use Pink silicone for anal. I love it, it's awesome, don't need to worry about it drying out. It's just great!

I just finished my water based organic one, now waiting for Thick and Rich to be delivered. Maximus is good too.

Water based. I only ever use water based lubes, so I'm gonna have to vote for that. When I've used anal toys, I use water based. I'm thinking about trying silicone or oil. I just think it would be so messy, and hard to wash off.

Oil for anal is baaaad.
