And if so, which materials? I have had worries about buying something that will give me this problem.

I have only had toys retain a smell for a very brief period, and most of the time they retain nothing. Obviously, glass and steel retain nothing ever. Smooth silicones also seem to be less porous and therefore less likely to retain odor.

Porous jellies/TPEs/rubber and similar materials retain more than odor - you can never get them clean. Some smelly chemicals can stick to the surface of silicone in small quantities, so they'll have a bit of a smell for a while if you hold it up to your nose. They're nonporous, so it's still clean (think of the way plastic food containers get the red color stuck to them after tomatoes are put in them - it comes off, but takes work).
