Anal Play - Enema or no?

Contributor: Alt Alt
So here is my question. Do many of you use an enema to clean it all out before doing anal play or having anal sex? I have noticed it doesn't always get much attention when discussions about anal play are brought up and I am wondering if it is just me being a poophobic or perhaps others feel the same.

Personally I will not even attempt a finger insert without use of an enema which can take quite a while (30-60 min) depending on how stubborn my colon is being, haha.
The only thing I don't like about them is how the water can get stuck on the Sigmoid colon area and when you think it is all out, and you start playing, it is not kool when a rush of water comes down which kills to lube, and requires you to then clean off the object, dry it, reapply the lube, and possibly redo the enema to just clear out the rectum area.
It’s a pain if you have not removed all water from your system, so it just takes even longer to verify that as well.

Although sometimes it seems like the hour long process of doing an enema is not even worth it, because I find it difficult to continue on the path of a "turned-on" state of mind, whereby once an orgasm happens I want to stop and move on to other things in life =[.
Maybe one day I will learn to continuously remain in that mental zone, and if anyone has any suggestions on how to "keep going" I am also interested those as well.

Anyway, but the main subject of this thread is to see if any of you are similar where you MUST do an enema before play…
Also if anyone has any tips that you might have found for enema usage, or expelling positions (ex: turning a specific way) that could be helpful as well.

I have been doing them for probably a year or so now and I guess I am hoping to find some quicker ways to get the water in, and out to get clean which hopefully speeds up the 30-60min. process that typically comes before embarking on anal play.

Thanks for any help, comments or suggestions.

I don't have a lot of detailed experience with enemas... I will say that I like the idea of doing them first, though maybe not such drawn-out ones. A simple douche (which is not the same) is often enough to clean the area up first, and takes 5-10 minutes.

It's also not a good idea to do full enemas too often, as they will put stress on your body over time. You should also wait a bit between an enema and anal penetration to give the tissue in your butt time to recover. Also, use plain water for either an enema or anal douche.

Hey there, thanks for the info. Although what is the difference? Is a douche just classified by filling up the rectum with water?
Also, by plain water, do you mean tab water?
Basically I use this device i created while thinking outside the box, which basically uses a rubber hose that hooks into the showerhead hose, which is basically just regular water out of the faucet. I would hope that is ok to use =]

I personally have never used an enema. I don't really like the idea of messing with my body functions like that. I do an anal douche sometimes, when I have recently had a bowl movement. For the most part though, I've found it to be unnecessary. When I first started having anal sex I was super paranoid about finding poo, so I always douched before hand and used laxatives the night before. Now I don't care so much. I always use a condom with anal anything unless I am using a pure silicone toy. A latex glove for fingers and small toys works great too. For me, as long as my diet is healthy and I go when my body tells me to, there isn't anything visible on the condom afterwards. I always shower first though and wash out the anus with my finger. It is a good time to do a little anal massage to warm up too

Something I really want that I haven't tried yet is to get a dildo that will suction cup to the shower wall...oh the possibilities! I want to get the Scrudy in orange for that purpose. link

Oh before I forget, yes tap water is fine for a douche. Just never use perfumes or anything in it, just plain water. And you're spot on about the difference. A douche just rinses out the rectum. I don't fill it up with water, just enough to rinse it out. I use a cheap bulb syringe (the little green ones that are sold for sucking snot out of a baby's nose, these can be found at any drug store or store that sells baby or health supplies) for mine. I just fill it with warm water and squirt it in my butt. You expel it, and then put more clean water in. You just do that until the water comes out clear, and yeah it takes less than 10 minutes.

Poo really isn't so bad, it washes off

I agree with Bulma that it's usually not necessary. The better you know your body, the better you know if it's the 'right' time for anal.

However, if you're not so regular or in tune with your body, an enema might be a good idea.

I have done enemas before, but I don't think it is really necessary for most anal play. I like to clean up a little before hand like Bulma said, but the enema generally is overkill in my opinion.

Thanks, that looks awesome. I am definitely going to get one of those. I had no clue such a thing even exsits! I only have one dildo that has a hollowed out spot for a bullet vibe, but I think I'll be purchasing more soon

Thank you very much for pointing out this great looking product! I can't wait to try it out!

Hey, thanks everyone for your input. That is interesting to hear your methods. I guess I need to get over my phobia and just try doing smaller amounts of water instead of having it go all the way up my Descending colen part. Indeed it cleans you out, but sometimes I find I have to wait 10 mins after doing an enema or do rolls, jumping, and twists to make sure I got everything out so that nothing makes it way down while playing.
No biggie if it does, it is just a hassle to do so.

@Bulma - when you clean your butt with your finger, do you use soap up there? Just wondering because I have always been too scared to try that one haha.

@Adriana, yes I agree, one will know when that right time is, and I would say that I am all for it, (I love the feelings, and how it helps with orgasm) although the poo is just the factor of 'not good'. I guess since I have only been doing anal play for about 1 1/2 years I am still kind of a notice, compared to some.

@Jimbo, I agree I think an enema is kind of overkill for anal play which only involves the anus and rectum, although I guess I feel like I have that assurance that when/if I bare down that something unexpected will not "show up" haha.

Just a random quick question. There have been times I have swam at night in my pool and me just being experimental I have put the jet up to my butt and let the water kind of move it around, well some I recall did get inside, and I am wondering if perhaps that is a bad idea because of the chlorine? Then again tap water has chlorine in it but probably in a less amount compared to a pool.

Pool water is still relatively low in chlorine, so I don't think it would be a problem. You probably drink some quantity of pool water every time you swim with no ill effects, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Alt- I use soap on the outside of my anus, but rinse the soap off my finger before I "go inside." I don't go very far though, just to the inner sphincter muscle. Soap really burns in the cunt, and I'm not sure I'd like to experience it up the rear either.

Alt, I don't know.. doing something for over a year sure puts you higher than a novice in my eyes. -grins- Of course, I'm not that experience as well - from my somewhat limited experience, it really just isn't as big of issue as you might expect.

So I tried your suggestion about just doing the water to kind of do a douche, and actually I enjoyed it because it was quicker and still pretty damn clean.
I tested it with my new plug nJoy Pure Plug 2.0, Holy DAMN! That thing is sooo big and feels amazing.
I will have to write a review about it sometime. That steel is feels damn sexy on the butt and it stays in amazingly well. The only part that hurt was getting it through the sphincter (for some reason that always hurts at first) Once it was in, there was no pain (0.0%) at all, and it was amazing to feel kind of full/weighted, but hell I think I could even go bigger than that. Kept it in for a good 30 minutes until I just couldn't take it anymore and I had to feel an orgasm with it in The full feeling really helped enhance it, although I still think I prefer more width on the sphincter itself. (Therefore tomorrow or Friday I will try my nJoy Pure Wand =] )

So I guess I just discovered the key to making anal play/sex/anything feel amazing: make your sphincter adapt, yet I am not really sure what would do that. Perhaps a plug with a thick neck, or perhaps using a plug to gradually insert and when at max Diam, to try an leave it there to allow it to "open up" more.

Anyway, this is good info to know here, and I think it will help me continue enjoy anal even more without being so worried about the poo factor.

I like that clean and fresh feeling after an douche or enema session but nothing more than pure H2O, warmed up a bit.

I do enemas on occasion however it's mostly for special occasions. I found that using a simple douche kit at the drug store, emptying the contents and replacing it with warm water works great. I do it about 2-3 times until I am usually happy with the results.

One thing I do to avoid the water getting stuck trick is lube up a bigger butt plug in the shower, place it inside of me and play with it and then pull it out. I repeat this a couple of times and everything works perfectly.

I just used an anal hook this weekend and everything turned out perfectly.

@ Alpine --> perhaps I will try the same with the butt plug thing. I have noticed whenever I start anal play, there is of course that damn water that starts to sometimes come down from being stuck. Perhaps it will help ensure it is all out first. Grrr.. why did it have to be our ass that has so many nerve endings and not something else like pubic bone or something, haha. I think that is a main reason why people don't try anal play due to their thinking process of exit only, in that they do not want to deal with mess for pleasure, with the possibility of pain. I guess I can't blame them, and indeed anal anything is an acquired taste.

I've actually used soap and a finger to clean out my bum with no ill effects, but I also use Dove soap--I wouldn't dream of using any perfumed soap or anything like that.

I have never done an enema. I usually just take a shower before anal play, wash the opening with soap and then stick a finger in to see if everything is clear for entrance. If I feel something then I put up a no entry sign. I have thought about buying a douche for those occasions. But after I started experimenting with anal play I am more aware of if I am regular and I take extra fibers. There are a few occasions were there has been some mess on the toys afterwards but my boyfriend (who takes care of removing them) doesn't mind. He just wraps them in paper and heads for the sink. No biggie

I don't generally take an enema prior to anal play. An anal douche can be helpful because it rinses the rectum well. That is enough to keep anal play relatively clean and it keeps the lube from being sucked up by left over waste.

I poop beforehand. I'll say it... I poop, you poop, everybody poops. I have NEVER had any embarrassing moments since starting to poop immediately before sex. I shower after I go to make sure everything smells spring fresh. I'm not opposed to enemas but what I do has worked well for me so why try to fix what ain't broke?

ok enemas are ok but if u use female condoms you are protected and u dont have to worry about a mess they are thin and dont disrupt sensation.

I use them sometimes. I, too, am a fan of the quick "finger check", because often you don't need to worry. Sometimes, however, depending on diet or just how your body is feeling it's difficult to get everything out. Apart from being possibly messy and smelly (and a turn-off for both of us), I find that sometimes having poop on a toy rubbing against my anus repeatedly can be somewhat irritating and uncomfortable.

When I do enemas to get ready for anal play, I go for the smaller "anal douche" types (usually 8-10 oz). The bigger ones tend to be overkill, and sometimes wind up bringing more down, necessitating a repetition of the enema, and water gets stuck, and it's much less comfortable ... the list goes on. Keep it small and you'll be fine.

Put the water (8-10oz, start off smaller and see how well it works), with no additives (soap isn't very good for the intestines, and while I've heard that salt or soda is OK I don't bother) in your favorite enema device and run it in while sitting on the toilet. Be careful when you put the nozzle in - if you're not careful it is possible to perforate the rectum, but you don't need to be too worried about it, just aware. Retaining the enema for a while isn't necessary, just let it come right back out, and you might want to repeat the enema once more. If the water gets up into the sigmoid it takes longer to come back out - that's why I go for the smallest amount that works.

I generally don't mess with them unless it seems like it will be messy, although it does seem sometimes that things seem a bit more slick (lube-wise) afterwards - perhaps caused by the water thinning the intestinal mucus.

The most important thing to consider is how you and your partner feel about it - if either of you are concerned about the potential poo problem anal play won't be as easy or satisfying. 5-10 minutes on the toilet and ~1hr of wait time (to let your rectum calm down and absorb any remaining water) isn't a big trade-off if the result is more relaxed and comfortable sex. Similarly, if it isn't a problem than the enema can wind up being wasted time.

Sounds like me, LOL! Although I usually don't plan it. If I've passed a bowel movement that day and I'm feeling okay (because my stomach is obnoxious), then I generally feel like it's okay. I'll usually freshen up a little bit afterwards with some water, just to make sure.

To the best of my knowledge, I've never found any fecal matter on my toys or condoms.

That was my point. People that use chlorine to control algae growth usually use tap water to fill the pool and then add chlorine, so the levels are usually higher than tap water and tend to fluctuate more than tap water (higher right after chlorine is added and then slowly dissipating until chlorine needs to be added again).
