How Quickly Will Rank Drop

Contributor: Illumin8 Illumin8
I understand exactly how the ranking system here works, and I realize that it is made up of many different variables. However, I am just curious as to how quickly it takes (on average) for ranking to drop. I have been extremely active on the site over the past few days. I became an advanced reviewer this morning, and have written two reviews since then, and yet my ranking still dropped .1.

I'm just trying to figure out an estimate of how fragile the ranking system is, really. If someone were to not log in for a week, would they lose an entire point on their ranking? Or would it be more or less drastic than that?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm active almost everyday on here, but there have been days when my rank dropped .1 and then went right back up the following day (or maybe a couple days later) for no apparent reason. So your rank may not stay down, in fact, I'd bet it will bounce right back up where it was before in short order. Maybe a lot of other people were very active during the same time period, or posted a bunch of reviews, or something like that. Don't worry, it will probably be right back where it's supposed to be soon.

Thanks for the response, Indiglo. I don't want to sound whiny or anything, I guess I'm just a little shocked out how volatile the rank seems to be. In the past few days, I've submitted 4 reviews, been incredibly active on the boards, rated reviews, etc. and (I think) my rank even dropped below a 5 last night when I wasn't on. The reason I say this is because I had applied to become an editor, and when I woke up this morning and checked the status of the application, it prompted me that I needed to have a rank of 5 or more (I have that now, but it must have dropped below that and gotten rid of my application, and now needs to update the fact that my rank is 5 again).

Anyway, I don't want to get discouraged, I think I just would love to see my rank recover the points it has lost with all of the time that I've been investing into EF.

Your rank is based not only on your activity, but also on the activity of everybody else on the site. So the rank can change wildly, especially at the ranks that change frequently. Even though I was being active, it took me a while to keep hitting the 5.5 mark and get it to stick, same with 5.6, and 5.7, and so on and so forth. Trust me when I say that you shouldn't get discouraged, and not to focus so much on the ranking. Continuing to be active will get your rank up, and sometimes it'll drop randomly overnight, sometimes it won't. The goal is to have fun either way

Like Sam said, the rating system is based on everyone else on the site, as well as your activity. Reviews and votes and comments on reviews seem to count for the most. But, also other people's activities are also part of the ranking. Here's the breakdown. How the Rating System Works ..

I have been bouncing between a 7 and a 6.9 for over a month. Sometimes for no "apparent reason" but it's due to others activities as well.

Don't sweat it, do your best and the rank will rise, but slowly. Yes, if you are gone for a while, or go a while without doing a review the rank will also drop, but seems inconsistent because you have no way of knowing all the other things it is based on.

Thanks for the input! I feel more comfortable hearing the experiences of others, and seeing that this is a normal occurrence. I definitely am having a blast here, regardless of the rank! it was just something I was curious to learn more about.

No problem! I know when I was just starting out I was really curious about the same exact thing and spent a long time wondering "why won't it go up?????" I'm glad you're having a blast, and I hope you can stay around for a long time!

This is actually the first time that I've been stuck. I have to admit my participation in forums has dwindled some, but I'm still writing the same amount of reviews. I guess it's just been super busy on here lately!

Hmmm well....I can tell you that I was at 5.8 Around Feb. I haven't been very active since then. Done my monthly assignments, but other than that haven't really participated.

When I came on last month to do my assignment I had dropped to 5.7 I was honestly surprised it took that long. (I don't WANT it to drop though mind you..But sometimes 'real' life situations are more important)

That's interesting! I would have thought that it would drop much more over that period of time. I think I'm just so curious, I would love to see a full breakdown of the activity on the site each day/week/month, which would give me a better feel for why ranking is moving slower or faster than I would expect. A couple days ago, I submitted one review, had moderate forum activity, and my rank raised .1. Yesterday, I had 3 reviews published, and have been probably the most active on the site that I've ever been, and the rank didn't change at all.

My curious side is just killing me in this! haha

My rank doesn't usually change directly after publishing reviews, but once people start rating them it tends to move. Give it a few days Also, because you just went up a point with that one review submission, you're now sort of at the bottom of that point level. It's gonna take more time to work your way up through to the next .1

And for anybody who's been trying to find the rank breakdown, it's available in the review program section of your account, but you can also click right here and it should work too

I don't think my rank has changed, but I don't really pay attention. Nice to know that it involves activity from other contributers as well.
