Do video reviews contribute towards reviewer rankings? Should they?

Contributor: Kindred Kindred
I just started doing video reviews thanks to the prodding of Dwtim . Admittedly, I only have completed 2 so far, but I have committed to 2 more and plan to continue doing them regardless. My question is this: do completing video reviews contribute to the calculation of our rankings? And if they don't may I suggest that we consider this? I wouldn't make them count equally as a written review, but they do take some time to film and edit for the final product (at least for me they do) and it would be nice to give people credit for them. I know at this point it won't affect my rank, but there are reviewers that have done tons of video reviews that I believe should receive due credit. So what do you think?

The video reviews already count. It's just that once you reach a certain number of reviews/ranking adding a new review doesn't affect your rating as dramatically and it takes more than one review. (You get decimal points instead of full points).

Keep up the good work.

The problem is not all people can or want to do video's, I am not sure if it would be fair to those people.

We do get a gift card, so we do get some compensation. Plus I notice a video on a review will bring in more people to your reviews, more votes equals better ranking.

As a side note, it would be nice if people went to Eden tube and voted on the video itself.

I choose other because where as I think anyone who does video reviews should get the acknowledgment for doing them but at the same time they shouldn't count against people not technically capable of doing them. It looks like Eden has thought of this too

That's good to know. I did not see anything regarding video reviews mentioned in the document describing how rankings are calculated and thought they had no bearing.

Video reviews do NOT count toward your ranking.

Video reviews can improve your reviews, causing you to get higher ratings, which will improve your rank.

They can cause more people to look at, and hence vote on or comment on, your reviews, which will improve your ranking.

They earn you points.

But since not everyone is able to do them it is unfair to include them in the rank calculations. It would create an unfair advantage for some and the rank system is based only upon things anyone can do.

Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying Carrie Ann.

I think, in a way, they do help your rank; they improve your review and more people see your review because they see the video. So indirectly it does improve your rank, I think.

But I don't think it should have a direct effect on rank because not everyone has the ability to do videos, and rewarding people because they have camera software and others don't.

Don't forget that most video reviews are attached to an actual review. Those reviews will up your rank.

I completely misunderstood the original question. I thought that as a whole video+written review counted. But the question seemed to have been about getting something extra for the video itself. Then no.

Sorry about that. It did seem odd to believe that reviews with a video would not count at all...

I voted "other" for exactly these reasons. I don't think it's fair to people who can't or don't want to plus we already get compensation. But I can definitely understand from experience how much work goes into the videos.

There are a lot of past threads on this. One that I recall recently.

My apologies if there was a recent discussion, I could find nothing based on a search. I also found no mention of video reviews in the Contributor Ranking: breakdown and logic page.

No worries. I'm always happy to explain and I know things often get mentioned in threads where that question wasn't even the topic, making it almost impossible to search.

I do not think it should because a lot of people just do not feel comfortable with it at all. They should not be punished for that at all.

Although I don't make video reviews, they are so useful and the people who put the effort into making them do deserve credit.

But, editing reviews is an activity that one has to be chosen to do, yet it gives a huge amount of points and I assume it helps rank. (Does it?) Video making is not reliant on someone being chosen to do them, while others aren't. What is the difference?

However, if given a choice between the gift card and a bit of a bump to my rank, I think I'd take the gift card for the videos. They are a LOT of work.

Editing does not impact rank at all.

I think it would be nice to have a separate rank system for videos apart from the written review. To at least inform the person of how helpful or good their video was.

Absolutely not! To get in front of a camera may be impossible for some, and uncomfortable to others. I may be alright with doing that, but I completely understand if someone does not want to. Of course they take a lot of work, but so do good reviews; even without videos. I personally spend hours on my reviews and am more than satisfied with the amazing compensation EF already gives me. Just my two cents.

I think the way they do it is good enough. Not everyone is able/willing to do video reviews. And since they only accept a few per product, and it seems to be mainly the same group of people doing reviews....it wouldn't be fair.

I JUST started doing them, so yeah it'd be great. But the G/C incentive (which allows me to buy more/review more thus helping ranking) is good enough. IMO.
