New ‘Extended’ review template! Now you have 2 options!

Contributor: Victoria Victoria
When you go to write a review, you will now see the following:

“Select review template*(required, select one):

* Standard
this is the original/classic review template. It can be used for free-form writing in longer boxes/sections without content prompts or examples.

* Extended
this is a new and more formatted review template. It provides specific boxes/ sections for a more detailed review, there are content prompts and examples for each section.”

With the new ‘Extended’ review, the system knows which category of toy you’ve chosen to write a review on, so it chooses the proper ‘Extended’ template for you. There are 14 templates, so the sections make sense with the toy you reviewed – because we all know a section that works for a vibrating butt plug ain’t gonna work for a book of erotic fiction. Some templates have more sections than others because there is more information needed on some products than others. So, in some cases, there are up to 10 sections. Some are required and some are optional. The minimum character requirements on the ‘required’ sections are really fair and work out to be about 2 sentences. However, you can of course write more than that.

Each sections has “Inspirational examples”...I had to sift through hundreds upon hundreds of reviews for those examples – using over a hundred in all – so don’t be surprised if you see an excerpt of one of your reviews as an ‘inspirational example’; in fact, take it as a huge compliment. If an example is from one of your reviews, your name and a link to your review are even listed! See how much I love you guys?

Overall, we hope this new template will help create more meaningful reviews. Sometime next week, the system will default all ‘Description Reviews’ to the ‘Extended’ template. This new option may also bring relief to those who struggle with giving their reviews direction, detail and flow. I personally like them because it helps the writer not forget important information and makes it way easier for the reader to pick out the info they want to read first. And the sections are collapsible for the reader (awesome).

I am really proud of this project and super happy to see it go live.

We hope you all enjoy it, use it, and make the most of it!

Wow - I am flattered to see some excerpts from mine - thank you!

I have one question - is the maximum length of 800 words now gone, or does it spread throughout the sections?

Wow - another example of Victoria hard at work. Girl, don't you ever sleep.
I can't wait to use the new form.
Thanks so much!

The save feature is absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for thinking of that option!

This is really excellent. I think it solves a lot of the debate about what should be in a review and what shouldn't and will be a superb guide for those who are still learning to create a complete review. I love that it allows people to read the parts they want to read whilst skipping the repetitive parts!

Yeah, it was kinda hard to keep my lip buttoned about it last week, with all the debate over reviews on the forums - but I wanted to wait until it was really ready to use before mentioning it.

This is one of those projects that came as a result of trying solve problems - and with some brainstorming and team work, turned out great!

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing them in the free form reviews because I don't see myself using the templates.

I am also flattered to see my contributions in the templates and I LOVE this new feature. I was just thinking recently how I wished I could do a review in bullet points. This seems to be a nice alternative.

First, epic-awesome job Victoria and Eden Team!

I second putting the similar product options in free form reviews. I may use the templates if I do a review in an area I'm not so familiar with writing, like books or DVDs or bath products, but on many reviews I've found a style that covers the points in a different format. This would have been ridiculously helpful when I was first figuring things out, so kudos on making it happen!

I notice that each section of the extended review has a save button. Does this mean we can write part of a review, then finish it another day?

Yup - it'll just say 'review' instead of 'write review'. Click on it and it'll bring you back to your unfinished review.

Is that functionality going to come to the "regular" reviews too? I hope so..

Okay this is exciting. I like coming up with the stuff on my own, but being prompted and fed inspiration is going to go a LONG way. Awesome.

I have had those moments where I sit staring at the computer wondering what in the hell I'm going to write! A template would be mighty helpful during those brain freeze moments. Heck reviewing the template can only help to reinforce what is important about the product and make it easier to really touch on all the concerns! I have had that problem where I figure the review is complete and wonderful only to realize I left a VERY important consideration out of the review...DOH!
Awesome just awesome! Much love to the design team and Victoria!

Yeah, this is definitely a wonderful addition - thanks for all the hard work! The only thing I noticed was that there is no way to change the review template you choose. I was just thinking if someone clicked one template on accident, there would be no way to pick the other afterward, so my only suggestion is that an option to switch be added.

So ok being an intrepid explorer I tried out the new review template and OMG was it the most difficult review I have written beyond that first one! I felt a bit like my "flow" was interrupted a bit and I had to restrain myself from saying the same things over and over in the initial rush to say everything I wanted to say about the product. I almost gave up and requested that I be allowed to choose the other form but I persevered and while reading the review today, a few days later I realized that it pulled every nuance out of me this wonderful template. I still think I prefer the free form style but the template showed me what might have been lacking in my reviews...all in all a HUGE thumbs up!
I would like to add my name to the request that we be able to change from the template to the free form if possible...if not then what the heck I like both styles.
*Muah!* :x

Oooh, thanks for pointing that out. I haven't reviewed a product w/ the option of an extended template yet, but that's good to know.

The template seems nice, though it isn't really designed quite the way I prefer to write reviews. However, is the "Standard" option supposed to be unavailable for description reviews? I had no trouble submitting one this way a couple of weeks ago, but now the option is grayed out.

I guess I should note that I originally didn't read "default to" as "required format", heh, so I suppose that answers my question.

Out of curiousity, will there be a template for the DVD reviews coming, or will those continue to be freestyle?

There is a template for each category - so the Extended template has one to match each type of product. It is auto-generated.
