#AskEden - Why are only some reviews edited?

Contributor: ghalik ghalik
Lately I have been noticing that many reviews which are otherwise well-written have typos or errors. They are from reviewers with a rank of <6. Editing is not mandatory after you reach that rank. Why is this so? People don't automatically get perfect language and typing skills when they reach that ranking. I would really like to see a system where editing is an option or even mandatory for reviewers with a ranking above 6. I find typos and errors quite distracting when I read reviews, and occasionally they are so bad that I consider downvoting the review (in those cases I refrain from voting).

I do agree with you that it would be nice to select an editor after you have reached that rank. After you hit 5.5, the only way to have your review edited is if you have a mentor. I personally love having a mentor! It's great to have someone else edit your review. I'm on my second mentor

It was some time in 2010 that we went to auto-publishing for reviewers over 6.0. I looked for the post, but it's buried.

If you see typos and errors, and it affects the quality of the review, don't be afraid to vote the review a bit lower than you usually would.

And the right thing to do is message the reviewers and let them know there's a typo so they can fix it; there's always a chance for any of us to miss an error or two.

You'd think so, but we've historically had bad feelings when this has happened. So, it's best to not contact the reviewer and contact an Admin instead (either JR or Sammi) to let them know.

Good to know. But that is too much of a hassle usually.

I posted a poll here asking if all reviews should go through the proofreading process. 25% of those who voted said that all reviews should go through proofreading, while another 65% said that higher ranked contributors should have the choice of having their reviews proofread. In total, that is 90% of the voters who were for more reviews being edited by others. That says it all right there.

I stumbled across a review like this earlier today. It hurt me to read. Even though it included all the necessary details, I couldn't make myself rate it EU because of all the errors. Instead I just chose not to rate it. =/

I've chosen not to vote when the review is full of typo/usage/grammar, but does that lower the overall quality of the review system?

I just messaged someone about a few misspelled words. Oops! I tried to be really polite and said I didn't mean to criticize. Oh well, I won't do it again hopefully the person doesn't get offended.

I frequently come across reviews that are great, but are full of errors. I rate them one notch lower than I would have without errors.

I'd love to message admin about it, but it makes me feel like a tattletale.

I've noticed this as well; I'm cursed with an inability to miss typos and errors! Sometimes the product name will even be stated incorrectly in a review. Now, here's my question: what about when the person who edits your review puts errors INTO it?
