Too Many Pictures in Reviews

Contributor: JessCee JessCee
I never have read a review that I thought had *too* many pictures. I have, however, read reviews that had plenty of pictures, but little text explanation.

I don't see this issue as "too many pictures" I see this as "not enough text" because before I buy something, I want to see whatever pictures the reviewer took the time to snap and include in the review!!! BUT to me, just because you have a lot of pictures doesn't mean you can slack on text.

I think you make a good point here. I recently read a review where I wasn't quite sure what some of the pictures were, due to close up zooming and perhaps lighting. The reviewer didn't Caption those particular photos so I found myself pretty stumped about what was going on.

I think your pictures are typically a great size. The problem with pictures being too big is when you open a review and they LITERALLY fill your screen. Your reviews are always a pleasure to read and I actually look for the specifically. I look for them not only to recommend things to my plus sized friends, but also to see what the quality of an item is like. If you really love something, I consider buying a smaller size for myself. I also do not see what you saw when you looked at your pictures. I really, truly, honestly do not. I think you look radiant, and you've got a butt that is seriously enviable. SERIOUSLY!!!

Also, I loved reading your comments and I'm excited to read the article you wrote. It's an adorable idea I'm glad that the person apologized to you, but in the future, if you are feeling harassed by someone on this site? You can ABSOLUTELY hand that over to administrators. You do NOT need to tolerate private messages criticizing your reviews, let alone your body or the way you carry it. It's UNACCEPTABLE and, like I said, you don't have to deal with it. I believe Kristi would be the one to contact, but if someone knows a better person to contact then feel free to correct me.

Finally, I hope you don't feel you have to change anything about your reviews. I have always loved them and always found the photos very useful.

Kristi is indeed the person to contact if you're ever feeling harrassed.

Fact is, photos are a personal opinion thing.

They are not required. They are not a necessary part of the review. If people choose to include them they often assume that it adds something to the review. In some cases, this is true. Good quality pictures that show aspects of the product not already shown in the site images can be a benefit, can absolutely add to the review.

Not good pictures that show the exact same thing (only with worse lighting) as the product pictures already onsite or that are repetitive (4 pictures of packaging) can, in the same way, hinder a review, making it less cohesive and less easy to read.

If you have a high quality review and images add something to it, great, you've made the review more useful. If the images detract from the text review (which is what you're contracted to write) then they make the review less useful.

It is my personal opinion that more than one or two photos should not be used in onsite reviews. (Offsite reviews are different, since there is no product page to reference when you're reading a review on a blog) Are there exceptions? Of course. Some people do images better than others. Some images are useful, some are not.

It's personal preference whether you put photos in, where you put them, how you put them in...
And it's going to be someone else's preference whether or not they enjoy them or find them useful.

Picnic is the editing software used by Picassa, which is an option I suggested to her because it also has a collage option that looks pretty simple to use.

I think the pics help me decide whether i want to get it or not especially the ones of the people wearing the product it gives me an idea of what it will look like on myself.

This is an interesting topic. I don't like reviews that have a tiny amount of words accompanied by pictures but I do love pictures that offer size comparisons. Lingerie reviews are great with pictures but more than 3 or 4 seems a bit excessive to me.

One of my main concerns when I add photos to a review is how users with slow connections will be able to read the review and see the pictures. The more image heavy a page is (and the larger the pictures) the longer it takes to load for our users with slow (or bad) connections. (If it ever loads.) So when I have a few pictures to add I try to condense them as much as possible, make them small, etc. Then I'll try to just add maybe a few, and put the rest in a video review. (If I am not doing a video review then I'll add more pictures to the text review, but I'll try to make a collage with them.)

Another option for those who can't do a lot of photo editing is to post a link to your pictures in your photo album. That way those who dislike the pictures won't see them, but those who enjoy pictures in a review can open them up and see them larger size. You could even add the clickable thumbnail versions that some albums offer.

Just an idea that popped into my head!

Me too! Miss Nessa, I have actually, when looking for something specific - have scrolled to see if you've reviewed the item since I know you always post such useful photos! You're my go-to reviewer. Lol. I love that you take so much time to be that helpful.

Now this, I understand. I felt the same way, especially since the people who have made complaints about it are the ones that I've seen go through each review of mine and vote down. I've even had a comment recently that was pretty clear that the commenter was irritated with me and my review. So yes, I totally understand feeling defensive. Also, it is hard work to add those photos and it does kind feel disappointing when you're down voted when you've truly added everything. Silverdrop, I hope this doesn't deter you from your style. I happen to love it and it would be a shame for you to stop doing it how you do it. It'd almost be like taking away from something you do well just to please others. I'm not asking you to continue posting photos just to please me, but I'll be the first to let you know that they are appreciated very much.

Yes - this is correct.

If you like doing the pictures and reviews and you're not showing the item untold times - go ahead and keep doing it and let folks downvote you. When you consider how many other votes you'll get - it doesn't matter in the longrun.

I was telling someone the other day that I have three people that I can ALWAYS count on voting useful - always.

So when I look at those reviews I laugh and go "Ok...jerk one and two were here...jerk three should be here soon - but compared to the 10 or 12 or whatever votes...it won't matter". Truly - it doesn't. I mean - come on. If you have like 10 or 12 EUs and then 3 U votes and those same people always vote "u" on your reviews (or lower) - trust me - other folks notice too and they come to you privately and stuff to reassure you.

Just tell yourself that it doesn't matter.

Just a reminder that a "useful" vote is NOT a bad vote, is not downvoting and it's kind of out of line to call people jerks for voting the way they feel.

We all have the right to do so and NO ONE should be forced to feel they have to vote they way everyone else does.

Hell, I've been reviewing just about since the program began and I work here and I still get useful and somewhat useful votes. It's the way it goes and, in the long run, it is not just a matter of telling yourself it doesn't matter -- it truly doesn't matter.

A few less than perfect votes are just not important and you're always going to have a few people who don't like you, your style or your writing. That's life.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it or not but for those who feel they want to provide extra information there is a place on most product pages to upload pictures. It's near the bottom, kind of just above the comments area and you can find it on all the "new" style product pages.

This doesn't help with lingerie since they have the old style pages but it does, for most products, give you an area to upload images that are helpful and will be seen even by those who don't read reviews -- while allowing you to be more choosy and only put the most relevant images inside the actual review.

Just another option, I suppose.

I like this widget, and I hope eventually it lets us upload things of custom sizes too (I just put one up on this page and it's got all kinds of white space), but I've found it to be super useful. Especially when I'm doing a descriptive review, and some people might care about how that packaging looks but I don't have a lot of space for a packaging picture in the review? I can add a picture of the packaging there. It works really nicely.

Personally I like pictures most of the time. I really enjoy them on lingerie reviews because it's nice to see it on an actual person rather than a model who's body type doesn't match mine at all. I also like it on toy reviews when it's a picture of something you can't really see on the product page, like if there's a seam.

Carrie Ann - I am sure you're right about it being out of line. But when about when they ALWAYS vote useful...I mean - you know that its coming. You know that no matter what you do - its gonna be useful.

What about when it is so noticeable that OTHER PEOPLE are contacting you about it - to see what you did - to see if it is a retaliatory vote? Yes - that has happened to me.

You're right though - it was out of line for me to say it here....and I'm sorry.

I do apologize and I shouldn't have done it.

Two picture or fifteen pictures, I don't really care about the number. What is important to me is that the pictures are clear and significantly different from others in the review (I don't need a Matrix-style 360° of the product).

I post a ton of pictures. If I'm going to spend money on a product, I'd want to know what it would look like, what it could do, just how flexible each part was, etc...

EF sells toys that can cost upwards of plus $100. Even if you're dropping $20, we should be able to provide customers with the best description possible. I don't mean to replace words with pictures, but anything I say, that I can verify with a picture, I do.

If you don't like it, then skip my review and rate someone else's.

I post pictures when I think they are necessary of a product and I try to make them relevant to the product. Now that I have full access to EF, I will post at least one comparison picture of the item.

What gets me, is when I first joined, there were posts about how people should post more pictures into their reviews, and now people are saying that you can have too many pictures.

Personally, I feel that yes, sometimes the pictures are too big (that's me!!!! But I am learning how to resize!! neat!!!), and there are some items that just have a couple too many. But that is what scrolling is all about.

Scroll down.

I personally like the pictures added. If I am looking at products to buy, I want to see it in many different ways because... If I am going to be dropping over a hundred dollars on an item (yes, even if I use gift cards and points) I want to see every detail I can. And read every detail I can.

It's easy enough to scroll past the picture to continue the written review. And those of us who use the Forums are only a few of the many more who just flip through the products here at EF looking to place orders. Some want more pictures than words, and others want more writing than pictures. Some want videos and some don't. Those reviews with lots of pictures might not be for you, but they are meeting someone's desires when looking at an item planning to place an order.

I've started uploading most of my photos to the product page, and only putting a few in the review, with a note on where to find more. I'm not sure if this is a better way or not, but I think it might be a good compromise, since people who want to see a lot of photos will have access to them.

I really like seeing pics in reviews because it helps determine what size a toy is in irl if there's something to compare it to (like a hand). Or what the color looks like not in studio lighting. I don't think I've ever read a review with too many photos. Maybe under ten photos would be a good number.
