Fact is, photos are a personal opinion thing.
They are not required. They are not a necessary part of the review. If people choose to include them they often assume that it adds something to the review. In some cases, this is true. Good quality pictures that show aspects of the product not already shown in the site images can be a benefit, can absolutely add to the review.
Not good pictures that show the exact same thing (only with worse lighting) as the product pictures already onsite or that are repetitive (4 pictures of packaging) can, in the same way, hinder a review, making it less cohesive and less easy to read.
If you have a high quality review and images add something to it, great, you've made the review more useful. If the images detract from the text review (which is what you're contracted to write) then they make the review less useful.
It is my personal opinion that more than one or two photos should not be used in onsite reviews. (Offsite reviews are different, since there is no product page to reference when you're reading a review on a blog) Are there exceptions? Of course. Some people do images better than others. Some images are useful, some are not.
It's personal preference whether you put photos in, where you put them, how you put them in...
And it's going to be someone else's preference whether or not they enjoy them or find them useful.
