Review word limits: do we need more or less?

Contributor: Petite Valentine Petite Valentine
Lately I've been getting:

The review must contain no more than 800 words, your review has [insert big number here] words.

On the one hand, I understand that EF doesn't want reviewers writing a small novella, but sometimes I hit the limit before I feel I even get the basic stuff out.

What about you? Do you have trouble reaching the minimum? Are you constantly exceeding the maximum?

Should the standard template word limit be increased?

What are you talking about? I can barely reach the minimum…

I personally think that it should be raised, even if we keep the minimum the same, the max. should be higher. I always get so frustrated when there is more that I NEED to say (some toys are just that complicated, as are kits!) and I'm out of room, so I start having to snip sections out! Then, I never feel that my review is satisfactory!

And darn review-eating Llama! I bet I'd have had MANY more this week if not for him lol

Other, I don't write any reviews.

My Baby says sometimes that she can't write as much as she would like to, so I do think the word limit should be raised...

Raised, codes, links etc. not counting, and hellllll yessssss a word counter would be an IMMENSE help, though if you write in Microsoft Word the same is found there too... ^^

I have to watch for this with almost all of my reviews. I would love if the limit was raised and or if we had a word tracker!

I think the word limit should be increased and I def think their should be a counter so you can see how many words you've used so far while typing up the review.

I wish there was a way to keep better track other than pre-typing it in a word processor. It depends on what I am reviewing. Some products I would easily write an essay on, others there just isn't much to say without sounding repetitive, especially on a basic item that doesn't really have any fancy features. There is only so much you can say about a traditional vibrator or a plain dildo beyond material, size, texture, etc.

Raising the word limit is a good idea, I always exceed the limit and have to remove a lot of words before I can save my work. A word-counter would be REALLY helpful too, why don't you propose these two ideas to Stormy on the 'Build a Better Eden - Community Planning: June 2012' thread?

I think 800 words works well - it helps keep reviews more concise and informational, and stops them from becoming too long and drawn out

I tend to agree with this. But I am clearly in the minority. That's ok!

I think this limit works pretty well. Sometimes reviews can get a bit lengthy, but there does need to be a limit to the length or you end up with a review so long no one will actually read it.

I am fine with the word count, however, a counter would be nice.

I'd like to see the limit be raised. I don't really need a word counter though because I write my reviews in Microsoft word and then paste it into the review section.

I think it's fine where it is...I always write the extended format anyway. Plus, I always write my review in Microsoft Word first.

I would like to see it raised. I use the extended template probably 99% of the time but there are some items you can't use that option and I have had to remove things that I didn't want just to meet the word count.

800 words is more than enough in my opinion. Most people can't spend that much time reading reviews if they are looking to buy stuff. They usually just take a look (my favorite reviews, on other websites, are actually two to three sentences about what they didn't like as well as star ratings about different aspects of a product). I'm looking to get an overall idea by reading a number of reviews, rather than taking the opinion of one reviewer as gold.

I've only gone over the limit once, and it was fairly easy to shorten it and still get my point across. I think the limit is fine where it is. We need to keep them short enough so that customers will read them. I know I appreciate concise reviews that still give all the pertinent information.

I don't think it would *hurt* to raise the cap, as long as the minimum didn't get hiked up with it. I always use the extended format anyways since it helps me remember to cover everything and lets me pace the obnoxious number of pictures that I like to include in my reviews. It would sort of suck if the extended format didn't work for something I wanted to review though, and I got squished by the limit.

I tend to ramble so I'd love a higher word count. At this point I do my reviews off site if I know I'm going to go over word count. Some simple items aren't an issue, but more detailed products need more words.

When I'm reading a review on a product I'm considering buying I want as much detail as possible. I find most of the 800 word reviews don't manage to answer every question I had. I don't fault the reviewer (unless they only wrote a few sentences) because the word count means cuts have to be made. The word count limit is frustrating not only as a reviewer, but also as a consumer.

The current limit is fine. It keeps people from rambling, and losing readers' attention.

If you are struggling within the standard template use the extended version. You get much more space to write and then the information is all clumped together

I think they need to make it smaller and larger. It just depends on what it is your reviewing... Like lip gloss or something for instance. I would find it hard to write 300+ words on lip gloss.

I'd love them to increase the word count. 300 words is very easy to write in three paragraphs. It might sound like a lot, but if you are including all the useful information, 300 words isn't anything. I run out of space sometimes because I include a lot of information. It gets on my nerves!

A word count would be awesome, but I don't have to have it.

I think we could stand to raise the word count. SO many good reviewers have the same problem of having to cut often important stuff in Standard Template.

I DO write mine on Word first, most of the time, but I use the Product Page to put my pictures, so the links to my pics increase the word count, so when I move it over I have NO idea how many words it's going to say I am using.

I think 1,000 words could be used, and NOT use the links and code as part of the count. Now that so many of us are using pictures, and those links take up precious word space, Eden's Templates should keep up with the changes.

I agree with Beck that a 300 word review can't cover much. For me, for even something like a lip gloss, that would barely cover the ingredients and what they are. Not to mention the review of the item.
