Rating reviews lower..

Contributor: LoveTies LoveTies
I wish that when people rated reviews less than extremely useful, they would make a comment or 2 on why, or what they felt I left out. My first 2 reviews I see where I went wrong and have done a lot of practicing and taking my time since then. I hate spending 2 hours on a review, trying really hard, and then getting useful and no tips or reasons why I can't get better at writing reviews if I have no idea where I went wrong! Sometimes I think some people just vote depending on how long the review is :/

Sorry. I think people vote on how long and what your preexisting rating is sometimes.

This has been an issue for awhile. I am guilty of not leaving comments behind and so are many contributors because many reasons. If you are concerned about improving your reviews the mentor program is the way to go. Then you will have someone who reads your reviews and gives you the feedback you want.

I also admit that I don't often leave a comment regardless of what I vote. I just don't have the time to help every review I read, and I try to read as many as possible.

My suggestions:
-Here is a thread with helpful tips on writing reviews: link
-Use the extended template to help organize your review
-Enroll with a mentor so you get one on one help.

"Useful" is NOT a bad vote. People are honest and honestly your rating is average for being brand new and having 4 reviews live. The rating "Extremely Useful" is usually reserved for out of the ordinary well done reviews, not good, but average reviews. "Useful" is a GOOD vote. I don't see a problem. NOBODY gets nothing but "EU" on all their reviews.

It can take months to get enough experience and increase one's writing skill to raise one's rating significantly, and from what I see as your votes and ratings, they look average and fine for a brand new reviewer.

And I agree with everyone who says the Mentor program would really help.

Thanks for the advice everyone It's not that I feel it's a "bad" vote, I just wish I knew what people thought I was missing, kwim? Guess I just have to be patient and gain some more experience

You nailed it P'Gell.

Useful votes and extremely useful votes are weighted exactly the same. I have reviews live with both ratings, I even have a review live that has EU, U, and Somewhat useful. In the grand scheme of things, a couple of Somewhat Useful and Useful votes are not going to lower your rank or anything like that.

Those are the kinds of questions you can get answered through the mentor program. Feel free to join, having a mentor can help you get that little something extra to really take your reviews to the next level. I'm accepting students currently, and so are a ton of other mentors!

Patience and experience can help a lot. But also keep in mind that the difference between a Useful and an EU can be the tone of voice you write in for some people, and not necessarily a lack of information.

I agree that in the grand scheme of things, a few U's or even SU's aren't going to affect things in the long run.

Something that helped me when I was starting out (along with a mentor) was to read other reviews on the same product and try to understand why they got the votes that they did.

Try to answer all the questions a person looking to purchase your item might have. Then fill it in with your observations about the product and finally, add how it was used by you. You do not have to be graphic, but if people know how it was used and get ideas of their own for using this product, it really helps. It takes time and experience, I think you are doing good for your writing level and experience.

Like others before me have touched on, useful is a good vote. Personally, I think too many reviews out there are voted 'extremely useful' when they aren't.

I think it should be like a bell curve. The majority of the reviews here should be useful and only the standouts should be EU. Unfortunately that isn't the case and I think that people vote EU when it isn't really earned.

I vote Useful unless the article is extremely well written, has lots of the info I wanted, or for some other reason (whim sometimes too), then they get the EU vote. If it is poorly written, has little to no info, is roughly 4 sentences long, etc... I vote accordingly. Sometimes, things are so badly written, it would be better to just not write a comment because I don't want to look like the witch that ripped their work to shreds! If it's a small thing though, like say...sizing questions or something like that, that could have been over looked in the writing process, I will generally leave a comment (or a funny typo...I like pointing those out too).

This is really helpful to me because I think my main issue was seeing all the EU's out there and thinking that anything less was not as good.. but from these answers it seems like Useful is good and EU should be an exception for super good out of ordinary reviews. I think the easily handing out of EU's around the site has had me confused.

I've seen extremely useful's with tons of spelling errors and that drives me nuts! lol

^ All of this. I spend hours on my reviews and I'm talking more than two. I usually spend a good chunk of my day on a single review. And even I get the occasional "Useful" vote. Useful is GOOD and you should always be happy to see a "Useful". "Somewhat Useful" and below? Those aren't really good. But keep in mind that some people are point-farmers and vote with reckless abandon, as well as some people retaliating because their review got bad votes. I can't tell you how many awful reviews I've seen get "Extremely Usefuls" and how many great reviews I've seen get "Somewhat Usefuls" and worse! If your votes are consistently "Somewhat Useful" and below, though? You might not be writing the kind of quality that is expected of here at EdenFantasys and enrolling in the Mentor Program would be a good idea. Good luck!
