Packaging in video reviews?

Contributor: Rockin' Rockin'
Hey all you video review watchers,
I'd like to know what y'all think about packaging in video reviews. I've seen videos where products are shown completely free of packaging, others where they are shown in the original packaging and taken out, and still others that just show the packaging separately. To keep this poll simple, I'm presenting three options below, and I'd love for you to elaborate on your answer!

I realize that everyone will read these choices differently. I like to see packaging if it's relevant (maybe it's good for storage, maybe it's good for gifting), but I don't care about it if a product just comes in a plastic bag. Maybe you'd rather just hear about the toy and not waste time on the packaging. Maybe you like to see if the packaging is tasteful. Just go with what you feel best represents you and give us some details in the comments. Thanks!

If the packaging is unique in any way, like it would make a great gift or storage or there was something really cool about something on it, then I would make a point of showing it in my own reviews. I do agree that plastic bags don't really need to get shown (although I admit to being guilty of having shown a product in the plastic bag it came in).

Aww, I wasn't trying to poke at anyone ("admit to being guilty") for showing packaging. If something comes in a plastic bag, that's just how it is. I like to know how products will arrive. Thanks for your opinions!

Oh I didn't feel like I was being poked at, no worries

Packaging is part of the presentation, and I think it is important. Particularly if I'm considering a toy as a gift, I want to know what I am getting. Porn-star plastic clamshell is very different than Evolved tins and even Lelo's black embossed boxes.
I love seeing it in reviews, although I don't strike against people that don't. I do prefer seeing it, though.

I like seeing it - in the background, or just shown briefly. Not like long-winded packaging opening and discussion though.

I like seeing the packaging, that why I almost always show it in my reviews. Of course, if It comes in a plastic bag I usually just mention that and avoid showing it. Some products are just tossed into a clam shell or box, others a sealed for safety reasons, I think that sometimes the packaging showcases the thought and care that was put into a product. *shrugs*

I like to know how a video will arrive because I have terribly curious teens and if the packaging is very graphic (and most of it is) I will open the thing behind closed doors...it also let's me know if I can get away with leaving it near my computer or if I need to lock it up.

I appreciate seeing the packaging, as long as it is kept short and sweet so that more time can be spent showing off and discussing the product.

If the packaging is completely minimal (like a clear plastic bag), then I agree with what everyone else has said about the unnecessity of showing it. Just a brief mention that the item comes packaged that way is sufficient.

I like to see it, but nothing more than about ten seconds, you know? No need to say more than a sentence or two on it, since it is shown clearly.

I feel the same as the OP-- if there's something interesting about the packaging, e.g. it's suitable for gifting or storage, I'd like to see it briefly. If it's just the standard plastic package with a porn star on the front, I'm not really that interested.

I like to see the packaging and appreciate any pros or cons about it being mentioned, and like Syd I show it for this reason. And on the contrary, I loooove plastic bags because they make my life easier by giving me something to cheaply and efficiently store toys in. I tend to mention the plastic bags because it's something I'd want to know about if I were watching the video. This is a pretty good example of how I like to mention plastic bags ideally.

I only show the packaging if there's something special about it, like Form 2's package. I don't like watching video reviewers remove products from the package, although I'm guilty of doing that myself in my earlier videos.

I don't mind seeing it, but I don't care if it's left out. The only time I really care about it is if it's something unique or special.

I don't mind seeing it, but unless it's like spectacular or something, I really don't care.

I like seeing packaging to see if I'm going to be able to store it in the original packaging and if for some reason I might order it for someone to see if I need a nicer package.

I like when the video has the person picking up the packaging and showing it to me. I just like to know what it looks like. I'm not sure why.

Ultimately, you don't buy a product for its package but I like looking at it and showing it briefly.

I've only shown the packaging for a toy once in a video review, but that was because it was from Close2You and I really loved their unique set up. That's really the only time I'm even interested in seeing packaging.

If it is cool, I like seeing it. I usually show it if I have it. Otherwise, I am indifferent.

I'm so glad that a bunch of y'all have responded. Thanks for your input so far ^_^ I feel like the data so far shows two things:

-If you think the packaging is nice/unique/useful, show it.
-If you show any packaging, it's not going to tick people off.

Keep 'em coming!

I think it's a nice touch to show the packaging, just because it gives a full view of the product.

I usually show it, but sometimes I just don't. Sometimes I have a hard time cutting down on the time as is and showing the package will just add more onto that.

I always show it because I personally like to know how a product comes packaged, and that's not something that is always shown on the product page.

It depends on the review. I'm in the middle of several (alternating between "yeah, I can do this" and "AARGH! WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO!"), and on some of them the packaging made its way into the review, whereas on others the packaging just didn't "fit" and there were more important things to talk about.

I don't mind either way, I know I have experimented with different ways to show packaging myself. I always thought we were supposed to show packaging as part of the video reviews. But I will keep in mind that boring packaging does not need emphasis!

I agree but I buy a product for the use not the package. Tantus and Happy Valley have some awesome toys but they come in a simple plastic bag.

I really like to see the packaging - especially if Im seriously interested in the actual product. That way I know how its going to be stored before I even buy it.
